rutamattatt
Our daughter (age 15) has been with us for 2 years now. She has been diagnosed with FASD, PTSD, and anxiety. We had her tested by our district in April of 2012 and while there was some margin of "error" due to language (English is not her first language), she tested at about a 1st grade level. She is now working at 4th grade level in most things, and I'm so proud of her and her hard work. But every day is a challenge for her with memory, overall cognitive function, emotional maturity, and anxiety. We don't know if she will be able to live independently and safely as an adult. I've talked to our umbrella school about our daughter's issues, and they said there is a way for us to modify her requirements for a diploma based on her SN. We can put together more of a "life skills" focus for her. Has anyone done something like this? What "classes" or life skills would you focus on? We've thought about basic accounting for money, typing, health. We'd also love to get her involved with an internship kind of deal in an area where she feels accomplished - like with animals or perhaps supervised with children. Anyone been through something like this?
geodob
One 'life skill' that could be helpful for her, is to practice dealing with appointments and interviews? Also to learn and practice self-advocacy? These are challenges that she will encounter after schooling. Where it could be helpful for her to practice them in role-plays, where their is no anxiety associated with them. So that she can recall this in the future, when required to attend an interview.
