Ottakee
We tried Saxon and it does use some letter tiles, etc. It just moved to fast for my kids. http://www.piperbooks.co.uk/index.htm This is the program we use. It teaches all reading using BOOKS--no drills, word lists, etc. It is a carefully sequenced set of books---actually 8 sets with 8-26 books per set. The first website explains it very well but you can buy it from the states at http://www.iseesam.com or http://www.roadstoeverywhere.com/3RsPlusRead.html
Hot Lava Mama
it uses a lot of different things...games, sorting things by first letter, cards, etc. It was at a good pace for my ds, but moved too fast for my dd. So what we did (since it was very expensive, and I didn't want to get another program) is that we took each lesson over 2-4 days...depending on what was being covered. That way, we slowed things down, and she seemed to "get" the concept better. We have been very happy with it, and I will use it for my other ones coming up. Good luck! carriet
I only have her to use it one, do you now think it is worth the investment?
AmeliaBinMO
Hi Carriet! My two dc used Saxon Phonics 1 & 2 when they were younger, and we LOVED the program. The main "con" I would see is that it is very teacher intensive, so it is a time consuming program. The time was worth it for us, however, because the results were wonderful. The "pros" were that it taught phonics, reading, and spelling rules. It teaches how to separate words into syllables, how to code with diacritical marks, and how those elements help in spelling. Even though the program requires time, it is easy to implement and lessons are scripted. There are many different letter cards, sound cards, ideas for games, beginning short readers that can be colored, etc. There were actually more manipulatives in the program that we could have ever used, but for me, that was a bonus. I'd rather have too much at my disposal, than not enough. If we needed a little extra practice with a concept, then I had the resources to do it. By the end of Phonics 2, I was amazed at the words that the kids could spell simply because they understood the rules. This is one program that I will always rave about. All that said, I know that it doesn't work for everyone. The main negative point that I've heard is that it takes time. For us, though, the time was a cost that was well worth the benefit. It looks like CBD has some pictures of the products here, and if you click on "Sample" and "More Info" on this page: http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=93131&event=1016SAX|64468|59987#curr If you have any other questions, let me know and I'll try to help. Although I sold our Saxon Phonics 1 set a few years ago, I still actually have the Saxon Phonics 2 set -- I just couldn't part with it!
