Foofy Coffee Lover
This is silly, but I'm having trouble settling on what to do with my K-er this year. This is my third one, but it's been a while since I've done K. :001_unsure: I used Sonlight for the other two, which was great, but am trying to keep my cost down. I have TOG to use with my 6th grader, and will use it minimally with my K-er, and Scaredy Cat to use for reading. but what about the other subjects? What have you used successfully? Mallory
Couldn't you just do your own Sonlight-ish program? Check out some library books and think of a related project for one a week or so- make the food from the book, go for a walk to look at leaves or birds or stars like in a book, do an art project to try the style that the illustrator used, learn more about the animal in the book, ect. K doesn't really require much, most kids are ready to start 1st grade work by 6 or 7 whether they have done K or not. Here are a coulple other ideas- FIAR is also cheap if you use library books. letteroftheweek.com is free.
Diana B
Along with what the PP said try homeschoolshare.com, as this is also literature based unit studies... units are planned out, some with lapbooks and notebooks, and totally FREE. Just made by other moms. This is what I'm doing along with phonics and math this year. They have the books organized by level along with indexes based on topics presented. So if you want to make sure and include certain things, you can look it up. :) If you've never been there before, I totally recommend it. They have **TONS** of stuff. HTH! Annie Laurie
I plan to do FIAR or SL core K w my youngest when he's in K next year. All I will add to that is phonics. I don't even do formal math in K, that's just what I'm comfortable with of course. I do really think that at that age lots of read alouds are the most important, a lot is covered with just that. Ruth Beechick's The Three Rs or Family Math for some fun math games is great for math, simple phonics, and read alouds from the library would be plenty. JESSICAinMD
I like http://www.starfall.com . It is a free website that helps with prereading and reading. I have been using amblesideonline (another free site) for a reading list. I pick out several books a week and check them out at the library. http://www.amblesideonline.org/00.shtml I like this web site's worksheets and crafts. http://www.first-school.ws/theme/alphabetp2.htm#b

muffinmom
Loved FIAR for K. In the first volume, we found every book except maybe two at the library. You can do as little or as much as you like of the activities, but just the repeated readings of the books was great in itself.
