Is Anybody Else Watching Elementary?
JESSICAinMD replied to Chelli's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I like it, my dh doesn't like it at all. He likes the more traditional versions of Sherlock Holmes. -
Please tell me we're not the only late morning starters.
JESSICAinMD replied to naturally's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I am another late starter. My kids aren't morning people. They take a little while to wake up. If I try to force them to start earlier, the kids have meltdowns and I need my emergency chocolate a lot more frequently. :) I try to start the day by taking a walk after breakfast. -
I read somewhere that they are working only of the upper level biology, chemistry and earth science. I don't think they are working on physics on any level for the time being. I moved onto NOEO for Physics.

Wish there was a science like this....
JESSICAinMD replied to alisoncooks's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
The <$150 might be tricky. Maybe you could find Sonlight's science used? The Discover & Do videos are so tempting. I was thinking about those by itself. -
:) I just realized I fit in this category. Time is flying by fast. I can't wait to listen to this one!

My youngest daughter has dyslexia. She is making good progress but she is not "at grade level." My daughter asked me not to tell anyone. This has become a problem at co-ops, Sunday School, and scouts when the children are required to read in the class or to write. She used to attempt to spell or read things in class the best she could. One or two kids would laugh or call her names. She cries a lot about this and has stopped talking to almost everyone in the classes. It breaks my heart to see her in so much pain. Does anyone have any advice? Thank you,

How much school do you do when you are sick?
JESSICAinMD replied to a27mom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
It depends on how bad I feel. If the very thought makes me feel even worse, I call it a sick day. The kids do crafts or watch Bill Nye. -
Travelling to NYC for a few days...count as school?
JESSICAinMD replied to Halcyon's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
It definitely counts in my book. Field trips days count toward public school attendance. Saturday or Sunday field trips count too. -
SL Core B vs. Living Books Curriculum yr 1?
JESSICAinMD replied to marylandhsmom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I would stick with Sonlight if you enjoy it. We are currently doing B/C and loving it. We have loved the book selections so far. It has been our best year of home schooling. -
What is for #1 favorite thing you've used for homeschool?
JESSICAinMD replied to bttrflyvld's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board

I don't schedule a time for breaks. I can tell when they really need a break. We using take about ten minutes after math. They both need one after math. I let them snack while they work which cuts down on taking too many breaks during the rest of the subjects. (One of the great benefits of kitchen table home school.)

Covering little things? Need some hand holding.
JESSICAinMD replied to LAmom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I just made a list of things I wanted them to learn. I took about five minutes a day to go over things. I work on one new thing at a time. I also used the list to practice handwriting. We review once a week. I let the kids place a sticker next to the things they mastered. -
I have used both. I like FLL 1/2. FLL became too much writing for my kids. It started taking a long time. I switched to R&S. R&S is easier to some of it orally if you want. R&S goes all the way to 10th grade so I won't have to switch after elementary school. I miss the reading selections in FLL. I wish the upper levels were similar to FLL 1/2.

is there a preschool program like MFW but cheaper?
JESSICAinMD replied to caedmyn's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I am doing Sonlight PreK. I have the guide and check out most of the books at the library. The books that weren't available at the library, I found used online. The guide has few simple activities to go along with the books. -
This is my first year of using sonlight. I wish I tried it earlier. Life is so much smoother. It is so nice to have everything ready for school. The book selections are wonderful. My kids are learning so much! I agree with the other posters about using 2 cores.

How satisfied are you with your choices this year?
JESSICAinMD replied to momto2Cs's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I am very happy this year. I wish we switched to sonlight long ago! -
I switch when something isn't working. If it causes constant tears, daily frustrations, doesn’t align with my values, or doesn’t help my child learn, I switch. I try never to switch to the newest curriculum out there just because of reviews and wanting to be on the bandwagon. (The exception was Beast Academy.)

Used Curricula, anyone else having trouble
JESSICAinMD replied to mom31257's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have had really good luck with ebay. I tried selling other places with no luck. I got double what I hoped for on ebay. -
Anyone else waiting on curriculum releases/updates?
JESSICAinMD replied to ByGrace3's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
:iagree: I am moving on. I am waiting, but not for long, for Beast Academy and Song School Latin 2. -
Have you looked into Singapore Challenging Problems? I use the books a grade level behind to help my oldest with word problems. Instead of completing 2a and 2b, maybe you could just use Singapore Challenging Word Problems 1 with 2b.

Very cool, thanks for sharing!
