Chez J
I am looking for quizzing-type science competitions (not science fairs) for students from 7th grade up to 12th grade. Are there any that do not require competing in a team? That allow entries of individuals?
snowbeltmom
There are individual science Olympiads: biology, chemistry, physics, and I think there is an Olympiad for computer science. I only have experience with the Chemistry Olympiad. My oldest competed in the Chemistry Olympiad last year. As a homeschooler, he was not able to register directly for the competition. We had to find a school that would sign him up. We were lucky that we were able to find a science teacher in a nearby district that was willing to register him for the competition. The initial local round was a 1/2 day event. The kids from all of the area schools met at a local college and took a multiple choice exam. The top 10 scorers from the local exam went on to compete in the national round. The national round was an all-day event. It consisted of a multiple choice section, a free-response section, and a 90 minute lab section. My son especially enjoyed the lab portion of this competition. The top twenty scorers on the national test are selected to go to the study camp at the Air Force Academy.
