MrsBanjoClown
My two are in K and 2nd this year. We are doing the map work with SOTW 1, and my 2nd grader is working through a map skills workbook, but other than that, we are not doing any geography. When do you formally teach geography (U.S. and world)?
Lily_Grace
We teach it along with history. Before that it's more about looking at one's place in relation to the world, using books like Looking Down and Zoom and doing exercises that show the same order: house, street, neighborhood, city, county, state, country, world, planet. ErinE
I teach it with history as well. Separately, I added in a US states study when we read SOTW3 as it seemed to fit well with the time period (my kids were 3rd and K). For the next two years, we're doing a world geography study at my son's request.
Down_the_Rabbit_Hole
We did World Cultures in K and worked on geography then and am doing it again this year in more depth. For US geography we studied the states alongside US history last year and will again next year. You can either incorporate it with your studies or make a year of it as a separate study. I have done it both ways over the years. I also try to do it at least once in each stage (grammar, logic...).
skeeterbug
Depends what you mean by geography. For learning where countries are on a map we memorise and label maps. We started with the easier continents (fewer countries). For physical and cultural we use Expedition Earth, spending a couple of weeks per country.
