mathwonk
If norse mythology is on your radar, the classic for me is East of the sun and west of the moon, illustrated by the great artist Kay Nielsen, who contributed to Disney's Fantasia. Original copies with the original beautiful illustrations go for up to $40,000, but copies exist in libraries. I attach a tiny sample from the web archive of reprodutions, but try to see as good a copy as possible with illustrations "tipped in".
