AAS/Spelling Power/Natural Speller..or ???

Hi,

I am here with another spelling thread! Ok, I want a program that teaches the rules and has coordinated word lists to practice. In the past I have used AAS with my oldest and although it worked, I had to use it without the tiles cause she hated using them. I ended up selling AAS thinking that it would be cheaper to use something else since I was not using the entire program. Well....here I am again.:tongue_smilie: I have been looking at spelling power. Is it set up to work with spelling rules? It says it is, but no samples are provided to help me. My dd is not a natural speller and needs lots of practice. If you use spelling power could you give me an example of how the rules are taught?(a week in a nutshell) It would be nice to have one book instead of a bunch of different levels to buy, but I want to choose what will be most effective.

Thanks,

Penny

Each list in Spelling Power is set up with a rule. You are supposed to have the child copy the rule then start in on the list and the child only studies the words she misses. For instance, the first rule is /a/ is usually spelled "a". There are alternate rules that are more "catchy" that I thought I got from Paula's Archives but I couldn't find them when I just went over there. I think Paula is on these boards so maybe she'll pop in here and help.

Every time you start a new list, you have a new rule. My kids could never remember the rules unless we used the more fun alternatives. My main issue with spelling power was that a lot of times the plural form of a word was tested before the singular form. For some reason that drove me crazy! But I know that a lot of people really like Spelling Power and it's quick (only five minutes a day per kid).

The "rules" in Spelling Power say things like, "The long A sound can be spelled a, a_e, ai, or eigh." They didn't tell you if there was a rule for any of these, and they didn't work on individual patterns that have to be visually discerned (when there isn't a rule) long enough for us to master them individually before doing them in a combined list.

I bought Spelling Power to check it out but I wasn't really impressed by their presentation of the rules. We ended up doing AAS and are about to start level 3. Those rules REALLY stick here, lots of review, lots of hands-on, dictation etc. and it's easier to start too - just open and go.
