I am looking for some advice from any of you who have children with NLD or Aspergers .What curriculum do you use especially for Math, spelling, and grammar. She would be going into 2nd grade. Feeling a bit overwhelmed on how to adjust all the schooling and where to even begin. WOuld love some brainstorming. Looking at Math u see, maybe Teaching textbooks? as for the others subjects no clue yet.

Thanks

LEslie

I know some don't like it but Teaching Textbooks is giving my autism/adhd/ld child confidence in math. Just take some deep breath and realize that you will still be teaching the same child before. You may just need to go a little slower than before but you will figure it out as you go. You will realize real quick when things are not working.

My child's biggest challenge is the anxiety of being wrong. So, it's not so much the curricula we use, as how I implement it. I don't test, I guide and review. We do tests together. DS has trouble with long assignments so we go slow. I do a lot of the writing. I avoid busy work, if he's learned it, we move forward. We use a lot of mixed media, talk about the subject, read about the subject, watch a video about the subject.

Thank you all so much for your encouragement and words of wisdom. I ve been wondering about doing a non formal school setting because that is when she is most happy. I will def. check out those books and see what I can do to make up a no stressful no test kind of environment. I have also heard TT has worked great with Aspie children and NLD is a sibling/cousin to Aspies so I will def look into it.

I am sure I will have more questions once I have read some of these materials. Please check back so I can pick your brains:). I live in a family of teachers on both sides and their way is not working I would love to have a homeschool based support where I can ask if this has worked for you or if you have tried something and opinion on your likes and dislikes. I think now the shock is over and through Internet search and the homeschool convention God has confirmed me in keeping both my kids home and is giving me direction with my son who is an accelerated learner now I can focus purely on her and teach myself a new way of teaching. Thank you !

It's really going to depend on your child as to what curriculum works best.. My girls use different things. My 9yr old can only tolerate work books, which totally kills me.. She can only do seatwork for about 30 minutes a day unless it's something she really loves like history. Then she will also do some reading on her own.. That's all I can get from her. She's a very difficult child though.. My other two girls (all are Aspies) are much easier to deal with and they will do all the work given to them. But they don't always get every program. We've had to throw a lot of things out the window.

In general, what has worked for my girls over the years:

We've tried every math program under the sun.. The three that came out on top are..

RightStart Math http://www.alabacus.com

Teaching Textbooks http://www.teachingtextbooks.com

Math-U-See http://www.mathusee.com

Easy Grammar Systems for grammar

Writing With Ease for writing http://www.peacehillpress.com'>http://www.peacehillpress.com'>http://www.peacehillpress.com'>http://www.peacehillpress.com

Free reading.. This only works if you keep tons of books in your house and keep the tv off! :D

Spelling is mostly done informally unless she wants to do a spelling program or really needs a spelling program. In that case we use either Sequential Spelling or Spelling Power.. Depends on the kid.

Story of the World for History http://www.peacehillpress.com

Life Science is great for that age

http://www.livinglearningbooks.com has a good life science program.

Atelier Art is always fun http://www.homeschoolart.com

Hope this helps..
