SailorMom
I don't know if I have "expertise" necessarily, but I do know that chimps and gorillas have been taught to read (to a certain extent). On a similar note - my DH took a language aptitude test a few years ago in the military, and the test was similar to what the baboon was given. No rules of a made-up language are given, but you answer 'yes' or 'no' to a bunch of questions by guessing. As you get more right, you start figuring out a pattern of what is right and wrong in that language. After a while, you can pick out a word in that specific language, or say that it is just a mess of letters. One of the only reasons other primates can't vocalize the sounds in our language is their inability to make consonant sounds - they are rather limited to what we would consider vowel sounds.
