Microscope Unit Study and Book Recs

Recommended Posts

Dear Hive,

Came across this microscope unit study by Kym Wright. Is the unit study any good and would you recommend it?

I've looked at various microscope how-to books. Would anyone care to make a specific recommendation? I need something that covers microscope basics, like how to properly focus and clean, and something that tells how to prepare slides. We are total N00Bs.

Thank-you,

Heather

We use it and love it. :001_smile: We're taking our sweet time with each lesson, checking out books from the library to read further on subjects like dust, leaves, and any other thing they have us look at and record.

My only complaint is that it can be a pain to find reading info to answer specific questions in the lessons. We use The World of the Microscope: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004TOE5DG/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0746002890&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0D765QES92EWERMW7XBR, but I think we could have benefited from having a second microscope book.

We've started this curriculum and put it away for a while a few times. Not because we don't like it, we just got sidetracked into other interests. It's always easy to come back to, and it's challenged us to remember the names and functions of each part of the microscope.

Someday (ha ha) when we finish it, we'll be starting her botany program. I like Kym Wright's style. :001_smile:

We were absolute beginners when we started this. I was nervous to pick a microscope. Now we're very comfortable with it. We're even looking into buying a microtome or making one. It feels good in my teacher heart to know that we conquered the first steps of understanding the microscope. I hope we mature with what we do with it in high school years.

Thank-you so much for your input. I just purchased a National Optical LED microscope from HST. I saw The World of the Microscope book and was wondering if I could get by with that and the unit study.

Did you use the Microscope Lab Sheets Manual?
