The only reason I can see for skipping it is that it is a bit pricey considering it consists entirely of activities that you COULD just come up with yourself using the manipulatives. I purchased it used, and will be re-using it again soon with my ds. BTW, we did Saxon K during pre-K, and started Saxon 1 in our "official" K year.
