claussenpc
Anyone use the Duke TIP CD that uses the Jurgensen text? Happy? Enough solutions provided? I cannot tell you the students submits all their work via the software or di they solve problems in the text as well? Just wondering if it is worth the pruchase. Thanks

Teachin'Mine
Can't tell you anything about the TIP course, but we used that book for geometry. It's very thorough and does a good job of presenting formal proof work with lots of practice - some of the problems are very challenging. The "solutions manual" that goes with the course is more like an answer key. For proofs, you are given one possible solution, but of course there are usually several others which work as well. Not sure how Duke's program addresses this, but if they give many solutions for each proof, then that would definitely be a help when grading the work. IMO it's an excellent geometry text and a not so great solutions manual.
Elise
We are using the TIP/Jurgensen program this year and have liked it a lot. I'm getting ready to make dinner for everyone here, but I'll be back later and give you the skinny!:001_smile:
Elise
Okay, back again. Here's a typical chapter plan in the TIP/Jurgensen program: Day 1: dd watches the TIP intro lecture (on the CD-Rom) for the chapter she is beginning. The lecture lasts around 45 minutes or so and covers all of the new vocabulary, concepts, etc. for the entire new chapter (not just the first section.) At the end of the lecture, there are interactive exercises that dd completes. So, no work in the Jurgensen text that day. Days 2 through 9 or so (depending on how many sections there are in that chapter): Following the written syllabus that comes with the TIP program, dd completes the work assigned for each section of the chapter in the Jurgensen text. The TIP syllabus provides only even answers, so we purchased the Jurgensen solution manual as well. I go over her work and check her answers each day. No CD-Rom on these days. After dd completes all the written work assigned in the syllabus for the entire chapter, it is time to take the chapter quiz on the CD-Rom. It is automatically/computer graded and is different from the chapter test in the actual Jurgensen text. After she completes this, she also has to take a written "Prove It" quiz that is found in the instructor/mentor manual that comes with the TIP materials. This quiz consists only of proofs. I grade her quiz using the answers in the TIP instructor/mentor manual. Hope this helps some. I'm happy to answer other questions as well.:001_smile: We also do Thinkwell Geometry in addition to the TIP/Jurgensen studies, just because we love Dr. Burger. We did Foerster's and Thinkwell Algebra last year, so we obviously love overkill! Edited February 5, 2012 by Elise
