Tammyla: Vanilla Sugar Recipe Here

Recommended Posts

Here you go -- and thank you for your kind best wishes for today -- I hope you enjoyed your first day of the new year as well.

Ingredients

  • 1 vanilla bean, whole or scraped
  • 2 cups granulated sugar

Directions

If vanilla bean is whole, slice down side of bean with back of knife and scrape seeds into airtight container with the sugar. Bury bean in sugar and seal tightly with lid. Let sit for 1 to 2 weeks. Use as regular, granulated sugar.

That is Alton Brown's recipe and it is for the most part, what I used. I used the same beans that I used for the extract. When my gift bottles had been prepared, I took the soaked with vodka beans and laid them out to dry on a cookie sheet with a paper towel under them and I let them sit for a few days -- I could tell just by looking at them when they were dry -- they didn't look 'wet' anymore. simple as that.

I cut them into lengths that would fit in the cans I had purchased. B/c they were dried, the little dark specks of vanilla were immediately visible in the sugar -- I put a little note on each can that the specks were from the vanilla beans.

I did use alot more than a bean per 2 cups of sugar -- more like 4 or 5. No one has complained.

Let me know if yu have any questions -- it really is as simple as it seems -- I made 6 cans of sugar for dh to bring to his office as gifts in probably less than 30 minutes.
