ACT scoring...

I am confused about how ACT scores the test. We have the Real ACT book, and for example, on the English section, if you get 63 questions correct on test 1, it converts to an ACT score of 26, for test 2, 63 gets you a 27, and test 3 gives you a 28 for 63 correct answers.

How could this be?

 

Any insights on how the ACT is scored would be appreciated!

After I posted, I reread the section in the Real ACT book that explains the scoring, and they explain why the scores are scaled, but they do not explain why each test is scaled differently.

...a bit on the questions from test to test, so they factor that in to make everything equal.

I think it has to do with the difficulty levels of the questions on each test. It was explained to me that it equalizes the scores of students who take the tests on different dates, but I really don't see why it matters. :confused:

I think the SAT folks do this too. My ds said that his last SAT was much harder than his previous SATs. He took one in the spring of his junior year, and the last one he took the end of the fall semester his senior year. Definitely the Fall test was harder than the Spring test.

I guess that makes sense, not that it's fair, though. I wonder if the June ACT is one of the harder ones.
