nancy in nj
We had scheduled & paid for 2 AP tests at our local high school. Two weeks ago, we had decided to have my daughter take only the Euro exam and not the Environmental exam (recognizing that we would be forfeiting the $80 test fee). This morning the school e-mails me noting that Kelly didn't show up for the Environmental exam and they could either order a late test for $90 or pay the College board unused exam fee of $50! Does this sound right that the College board would charge for not taking a test???? I guess we now know why so many kids show up for an AP test and sleep through it. It must be cheaper to fill in a few answers and then cancel the day's scores rather than pay this outrageous unused test fee! Not happy at all! Blue Hen
Last year my DS decided to not take an AP exam after it was paid for. I notified the school about 2 weeks before the test date and was told that we would receive a refund minus the CB restocking fee. I think the check, which came a few months later, was around $50. Could the person have meant that? Carole
Blue Hen
Refunds You may ask for a refund if you do not begin an exam for which you have paid. Local school policy determines the amount of the refund. You will probably be required to pay the $13 fee the school is charged for each unused exam. Once you begin an exam — that is, write on an exam booklet or answer sheet — you cannot receive a refund. I wonder what your local school policy is? Carole
nancy in nj
Thanks for the link Carole. No, this woman really thinks that I owe her another $50. I've just sent her another e-mail with the link you provided. She just took over administering the AP process this year, so I think it is just a matter that she is confused. Perhaps the school pays for their students exams, so school policy requires the $50 penalty, but I already gave her $80! I don't even care about the refund...I just don't want to have to explain to my husband that I owe another $50!
Kathy in Richmond
That school isn't following the College Board's policy at all. Last year, my senior dd decided at the last minute not to sit for one of the exams she'd signed up, because it wouldn't have gained her any credit at the university she'd chosen. I called the local high school to let them know - I didn't want them to wait for her to show up that morning. The *school* informed me that I was due a refund and sent me a $73 refund. Really, pursue this! Good luck, Nancy!
nancy in nj
Everything worked out fine. It was simply a matter of the new administrator misunderstanding information that the more experienced person provided. She apologized. Nancy
