JeanM
My older ds (just turned 12) asked if we could work more on vocabulary, and I hate to say no to that. His vocabulary is already quite advanced, just from reading. I showed him a sample of the MCT vocabulary program, and he told me that it would be waste of money that he could just use a thesaurus and/or dictionary. I like the idea of an actual program, just because it is easier to track, and easier to review words. If he uses a dictionary though, he can pick words that he doesn't already know. Does anyone have a plan for using a dictionary/thesaurus? Other suggestions? I could twist his arm and buy the MCT anyway.
2smartones
Has he already been all the way through WorldlyWise? If not, there's a free online version (2nd thru 12th, I believe??) that you could try without worrying about cost vs. value. http://wordlywise3000.com/ What about root studies? Have you already tried something like Vocabulary Vine, English from the Roots Up, and things like that?
zaichiki
I really like to approach vocabulary study from the etymology perspective. I *finally* got Vocabulary from Classical Roots -- been planning that for ages.
cat
We have been using Vocabulary Cartoons. Sells at Amazon for about $10.00. It is great, my kids enjoy it... the book makes learning fun and they seem to remember many of the words. http://www.vocabularycartoons.com It is based on SAT words. lmnew2004
I like Wordly Wise, but I'm not sure what level it goes up to.
love2read
it would be waste of money that he could just use a thesaurus and/or dictionary. Not sure what you showed him, but he totally missed the point of MCT if he thought that. It's not at all the same as using a dictionary and thesaurus.
