I can't remember if this book goes into the different parties (my copy is packed for moving right now), but Woodrow for President by Cheryl Shaw Barnes (they also have other books about governement) is a cute book about elections.

I also so this book on Amazon about Presidential Elections that looks like it might explain the different parties.

I have to smile because my daughter's teacher found this subject so sensative that he asked the parents of his class to talk about it with their children. My daughter is 8. I love the ideas about presenting the parties in the historical contexts. We had a brief talk outlining the positive and negative images of the R and D party and mentioned that both parties have great diversity within. Love the idea of the presenting the party histories.
