eight_gregorys
Hi! We are relocating to the Santa Clarita area in March. We lived there many years ago, but it was when the children were babies so we weren't homeschooling. What info do you guys have on Homeschool groups? This is my main concern as we are leaving a wonderful group in Raleigh and I would love to get the kids plugged in as soon as possible. Thanks! mykdsmomy
I'll ask around. I live in Long Beach so it's a ways from Santa Clarita but I'll see what I can find for you :) Welcome back!!
elfgivas
there is a fantastic homeschool group in santa clarita. we live 45 minutes north of there, and were members for several years. now, to remember the name of it.... it used to be homeschoolinginsantaclarita. this is the old yahoogroups link http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HomeschoolingInSCV/ and here is a link to a recent announcement. i think the vicki who posted it is the leader of the group and maybe you can find her from there? http://www.mothering.com/community/forum/thread/8728/wed-march-27th-southern-ca-homeschooling-discussion-group hth, ann
NancyNellen
We are just south of Santa Clarita by a bit (near Burbank). I have a number of friends up there who are part of Lighthouse Christian Academy, which is an ISP (independent study program). Also, Grace Community Church in Sun Valley has a homeschool ISP, as well. I know many people who are part of that group and love it. We file the Private School Affidavit and are not attached to any groups but have found many homeschooling friends through church. Good luck with your move! mktkcb
The others are right. lots of homeschooling groups, Christian and non. Most well known Christian ones are probably Cornerstone (Largish, can do support group only, or psp), Lighthouse (smaller, great people, but waiting list, support only or psp), Advantage Preparatory Schools (fairly large, great people, lots of activities/classes for all ages through high school, psp only). There are numerous charter school programs available that are good, if you are of that persuasion. A thriving secular program is Huckleberry Learning Center, which does a ton of different classes that seem to be around 200 a semester unless you are part of a charter, then free. As someone else said, Grace Com. in Sun Valley has an affiliated psp up through Jr. High. Classical Conversations has a group up here also. I personally am with APS, and it has served me well (have done all 14 years with them so far). Let see, links..... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HomeschoolingInSCV/ http://www.hucklc.org/ aps4me.com contactCCHE@yahoo.com (cornerstone christian home educators) http://www.examiner.com/homeschooling-in-los-angeles/elmarie-hyman ok..gotta run to bible study...I'll see if I can come up with other helpful links later. BTW, I live in Newhall/Valencia Kayleen
eight_gregorys
Wow...thanks for all the info. I'm wondering what is a psp? The Huckleberry Learning Center looks great. You said the classes are free if you are enrolled in a charter.....would that include CAVA? We are possibly looking into enrolling in K12, but haven't decided for sure. Thanks so much! Andrea Let me know if you have any questions etc. about K12. We have used K12 off and on for several years. My ds10 is still with CAVA but we are going to put him in Sky Mountain soon. I like it much better than CAVA ;)
MarinesWife
A couple of my friends use CAVA. They love the K12 program. However they said as their children have gotten older the requirements aside from the program have increased. More testing. More ... whatever. Just more. Things to watch, log on to, etc. They're tired of it. Both are leaving CAVA after this year.
mktkcb
psp means Private school Sattellite Program....it's the new name for ISP basically. The public schools and charters latched on to the ISP acronym, so "umbrella schools" that are private schools on the books have taken on the new letters to distinguish themselves from the public ISP's. Thats all. If you want info on charter schools and huckleberry, I'll pm HollyVanH, who is on the WTM forum and teaches there. I also know her because our kids are in the same theater group. Maybe she can pop into this discussion and give you some more info. I'm not sure how CAVA works with paying for other classes.

eight_gregorys
Thank you so much for explaining what a psp. I appreciate all the information. We have been looking at our options and I'm thrilled there are so many options available to us. Any additional info would be great!
eight_gregorys
I was wondering why you prefer Sky Mountain over CAVA. What are the advantages/disadvantages to both? Is there a waiting list for Sky Mountain? Thanks! Let me know if you have any questions etc. about K12. We have used K12 off and on for several years. mktkcb
you're very welcome. I pm'd Holly, so if she pops up, she can answer more of the charter school/Huck questions you might have that I can't answer. Let me know what areas of additional info you might need, and I'll try to help if I can. How long has it been since you lived here, btw? It's a great place to live (aside from the cost of living of course), and there are zillions of homeschoolers. The city has a great website, and you can get lots of info of various kinds there as well.
