Whittling for ds10? Christmas gift ideas?

I see some whittling things on Amazon. What would you suggest?

Would you recommend a whittling set like this:

or buying a knife, soap and soft wood seperately? What kind of knife? Swiss army or a special whittling knife?

I learned to whittle with soap and sticks.

 

This kit has the glove, some soap, etc. You could go to the kitchen specialty store or hobby shop for a glove. You could get dollar-store soap and sticks from the yard.

 

I think the knife is ok, but you need a stone and oil. A sharp knife is the key to work with - much safer and easier to control. Any old knife will do. I used a pocket knife.

 

So, I think you could get better supplies if you bought them outside of the kit. However, if this is a passing fancy, go with the kit and get a stone for sharpening. :)

My son and several of his Webelos buddies got this book. They all seem to think it's great. :)

Thanks for responses. If I do buy seperately, which swiss army knife do I get for him? I think getting the knife would serve many purposes than just whittling. Amazon has so many, though.
