Jayne J
Just my preliminary fact-finding mode here, but I am considering devoting summer to studying Asian history/literature/culture etc., focusing on China and its neighbors. Since I was public schooled, my knowledge of the topic is...spotty. I am particularly looking for good history resources, since our library has tons of cultural stuff, but very little history (for any age) What resources should I be looking at? It would be for 3rd and 1st graders.
helena
This website might have something useful? http://www.afk.com/ This is for older kids, but you might find something inspiring here too: http://www.sonlight.com/history-geography-5.html hth
kiana
Here's a list by Laura Corin on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Ideas-for-Studying-Chinese-history-ages-6-14/lm/1XHCU8PVLXH9K/ref=cm_lm_byauthor_title_full Many of them are too old, but they're pretty well labelled and the ones that are too old for your kids may be good references for you as well. Jayne J
Thanks for the lists--I'll check them out. There seems to be a dearth of Asian history sources for elementary level!
Jyniffrec
I am finding that novels are what we are going to have to rely upon when we study Asia. Laurence Yep's name keeps coming up for both chapter books and picture books. Demi is another good one for picture books that older children can enjoy as well. I can't go into the room right now because the kids are in there asleep, but I will have a look later and see if there are anymore authors that I have for the ages you are talking about. Mommyfaithe
Little Pear by Eleanor Lattimore was our jump off point for Asian cultures for my little guys. They LOVED these books! Then I used little picture books from the library to look at landscape, geographical features, holidays and religious customs. ~~Faithe
