ereks mom
Which level of R&S English would you use with a student who has recently completed ABeka Language B (5th) with a B average?
Janie
I teach R&S 6, 7, and 8 now in a private school, plus I supervised the transition of grades 2-10 to R & S several years ago. R&S 6 (sixth grade) is not too demanding, but it does assume certain knowledge that Abeka does not teach, or teach thoroughly. So, I would start with R&S 5 to build solid understanding and confidence. Use this as a transition year, and if you finish early, just go on to R&S 6. :) Hope this helps! This was our experience, and if I could do it over I'd have gone back to R&S 5. Ds1 did Abeka through B and even started C but we kind of stalled out. Switched to R&S 6 and he had quite a tough time of it. The only positive was that he liked R&S a little more because he thought it explained concepts better than Abeka did. Janie
...he liked R&S a little more because he thought it explained concepts better than Abeka did. I agree. I don't think Abeka explains things thoroughly at all. It's like they have a few lines of rules and expect you to get it. I look at Abeka now as supplementary, if anything, for that very reason. Lil Mama Bird
I'm very thankful for your explanations in this thread. My dd did Abeka 3rd grade LA last school year and I'm thinking of switching to R&S for our 4th grade year. What level R&S would I use for our 4th grade year? Thanks for any help! Janie
I think R&S 4 would be fine. The sequence begins to be more rigorous in R&S 6. R&S is a great series of grammar books. Not only are the lessons thorough, the sentences used are excellent in content. Lots of truth is taught just in the sentences!

There is a noticeable jump between 5 and 6. Cinder
