Aludlam
I'm working on our history for next year. I have the word "Homer" written on one my pages ... could you please tell me some books to write under it? (LOL) My littles are in 3rd and K. Looking for some great retellings that I could read to them now, but they could read later. thanks Angela
Chris in VA
Mary Pope Osborne has a fun retelling of The Odyssey. It's several small, hardbacked volumes, and it reorders the story. Great, tho--some gore, but lots of fun.
Skadi
King Midas and the Golden Touch by Charlotte Craft Psyche and Cupid by Charlotte Craft Pegasus by Marianna Mayer Persephone and the Pomegranate by Kris Waldherr Classic Myths to Read Aloud: Greek and Roman Mythology by Russell Olympia: Warrior Athletes of Ancient Greece by Dyan Blacklock The Trojan Horse: How the Greeks Won the War by Emily Little Audiobook: The Children's Homer by Robert Whitfield Ancient Greece Treasure Chest by Lynn Brittany Zeus: King of the Gods by George O'Connor (series) (for the third grader, tons of pictures might make it a good read-aloud for K) Black Ships Before Troy: Story of the Iliad by Rosemary Sutcliff (read-aloud) The Wanderings of Odysseus by Rosemary Sutcliff (read aloud) The Ancient Greece of Odysseus by Peter Connolly (read aloud)
Jayne J
http://storynory.com/archives/educational-stories/ These aren't books, but they were my littles first intro to the Illiad and Odyssey. Natasha at Story Nory does a great job narrating. The story lines are greatly cut down, but retain the spirit and exciting bits. This might be a good way to familiarize them with the storys and characters before attempting longer versions. Black Ships Before Troy and The Wanderings of Odysseus by Rosemary Sutcliffe are great--well written and illustrated--but can be long for wiggly little ones if they are not used to read alouds. They are worth it though.
