The second edition does offer more practical practice--but it is still a 'learning style' issue--same as with other non-traditional texts (like Saxon). The lack of worked out solutions is a big deterrent to many because Jacobs teaches HIS own logic--and he does not always explain things--he is more of a guide--again it is a learning style thing.
