cursive first question

If you teach cursive first, do you teach manuscript later or not teach it at all? How do you address info that is needed on forms, etc. as they get older?

 

Do children just innately know how to write in manuscript after they've been taught cursive?

I grew up in France where cursive is taught first. I never learned to print in school but I just know how to do it.

Thanks- I was just filling out an insurance form the other day and I thought "what if Grace never learns manuscript?"

So are you just so frustrated with the printing thing in US schools? Or, did you teach your children cursive before the schools got them??

I do cursive first, and my ds6 just "picked up" manuscript.

 

He keeps a little notebook for drawing/writing/etc for fun...and he prints 99% of the time in that. In our school work, he does cursive.

 

My dd4 picked up manuscript before I had the chance to start with cursive. I'll start her on cursive when she officially starts kindy, I guess.

 

No fears about filling out forms here.:D If my dc didn't "pick it up" by about 2nd grade, then I would teach it (kind of the opposite schedule most kids keep for handwriting)...but it looks like that won't be necessary.

 

The only issues I've had are finding workbooks for K-1st in cursive, and dealing with friends/family/Sunday School teachers who don't understand the concept of "cursive first."
