oliveview
Ds has been a late reader but he is up and going pretty well now. Does anyone have any recommendations for books that a 9 yo boy would LOVE? I am trying to get him to fall in love with reading and so far I haven't really had any luck. nukeswife
My son loved the Magic School Bus chapter books at that age. He was not a late reader but a very reluctant one. He turned 10 in May and is finally in love with the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.
oliveview
Thank you, I think he will like the Olympians series. He is a late reader and a reluctant reader, and it makes for a challenge.
hi_itsgwen
My boy loves anything by David Macaulay...the books are incredibly illustrated in b&w, and he has written books about all kinds of things: the building of the Pyramids, Roman Village, Big City, How Things Work...right up my boy's alley. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/ref=ntt_athr_dp_sr_1?%5Fencoding=UTF8&sort=relevancerank&search-type=ss&index=books&field-author=David%20Macaulay The reading just kind of goes along with the illustrations, so it's painless. :) He also likes the Boxcar Children Chapter books. (His big sister's influence.) :) Diary of a Whimpy Kid are also geared toward boys/humor.
starwarsmomma
Hank Zipzer is my son's favorite Written by FONZIE (Henry Winkler), about a dyslexic boy who struggles with reading, loosely based on his own struggles with dyslexia as a boy. Very good series.
daisychics
The Invention of Hugo Cabret - my library also had the audio Cd (maybe he can follow along). Also, ds fell in LOVE with the Poppy series by Avi. I read most of them out loud before bedtime and then he would read them after I left his bedroom. In the mornings he would be on the couch reading. To this day, he still wishes that there were more Poppy books. Edited September 9, 2009 by daisychics
Deana FL
Magic Tree House (Osborne) series was a favorite of my 8/9 ds.
tdeveson
Diary of a Wimpy kid. It's perfect boy humor. My 9-year-old loved the three books so much he asked for the blank journal (from the same author) and has begun writing. For a reluctant reader and writer, that's awesome news. lisabees
My 13 year old is a struggling reader. He told me this morning that he trouble falling asleep and head 39 pages in Diary of a Wimpy Kid! NEVER has he chosen to read on his own!!
