Reesegirl
My dd has a dress that she got at Ross for $1.00. It has a tag inside that says dry clean only. The material in the dress is 95% polyester and 5% Spandex. Can I hand wash this or will I ruin the dress? I hate to pay $10.00+ to have it dry cleaned. Thanks! ChrisN in NY
If it were my dress, or my dd's dress, I would certainly hand wash it and hang it to dry. HTH. Dry cleaning isn't a necessity for polyester/spandex. Imo, you could even wash it in cold water on the gentle cycle in your machine.
Guest Virginia Dawn
I've washed dry clean only things before. The fact that the material is all synthetic is a big plus. If you do decide to try it, use cool water and rinse well. If it is stretchy or knit, roll in a towel to absorb most of the water then lay flat to dry. If it is a stable weave you can hang to dry. BikeBookBread
$1 -- wow!! I hand-wash dry clean only stuff all the time in the sink with a bit of baby laundry detergent. I dry flat on heavy towels so that it doesn't stretch out, and then hang up once the weight of the dripping water is gone and it is damp. Reesegirl
Thanks for your suggestions...I will definitely hand wash and soak up with a towel. It is a stretch fabric. The only time I have tried to hand wash a dry clean only item it was made from accitate (sp??) and it turned out crispy! Thanks!
Jackie in NE
I've always thought that dry cleaning was a huge conspiracy to take over the world..... one, over-priced cleaning bill, at a time. I hate paying the cleaners. I would wash it.
LizzyBee
I've washed 2 things that said dry clean only. I know one was polyester but I'm not sure about the other. Anyway, both times I thought they were safe fabrics to wash. They both shrank drastically. You can use dryel to reduce how often you have to get items professionally dry cleaned. I haven't ruined anything with that yet.
eternalknot
My uniform is dry-clean only. I handwash it on my layovers, but machine wash (cold water, gentle cycle) at home. The fabric thins with each machine wash, but the nature of my outfit is that it is worn and washed a lot. A regular outfit would definitely be machine-washed in this house :)
