TechWife
I just received our Prealgebra program for next year, Chalkdust. The program recommends that the student work for one hour a day on math, doing video then practice problems until time for another video. I think if I followed this recommendation, my son would become easily distracted and would not make progress in the course because he would become bogged down in doing the problems, as there is no solid deadline. I am looking for alternate ways to schedule this program so that he would complete a specific amount of video time and/or a specific number of problems each day. Has anyone ever done this with Chalkdust, and if so, how did you schedule it? Thanks

CO MOM
I think if I followed this recommendation, my son would become easily distracted and would not make progress in the course because he would become bogged down in doing the problems, as there is no solid deadline. This is exactly what happened with my ds last year with CD Pre-algebra!! Watching the whole video section (usually twice), going through a whole section at once, and then having this mass of problems to do - even if we only picked some - was overwhelming. I'm not sure if we will carry on next year or switch, but if we do continue, I'm going to have him do only one objective at a time, rather than section, then do the related problems. I'm not sure how this will work with the video portion - just watch one example at a time maybe? Maybe this was what we were supposed to do in the first place!! TechWife
This is something I'll explore - one objective at a time. I'm not familiar enough with the book layout yet. Hmm...
TechWife
I spent a lot of time with CD Prealgebra yesterday. I think I am going to implement your suggestion. This is what we will try: Watch Chalkdust to cover the objective (seems to be 10-15 min each) then do "You Try It" problems. If they are correct, then do the odd numbered problems for the objective covered. If they are not correct, ask for help or re-watch the video and try again, once you can work them correctly, work the odd numbered problems for the objective. It looks like this will be around 15 min. of video everyday and about 20 problems. I will have him do all of the chapter review and all of the chapter test, as they suggest. I'm hoping it won't be as hard to implement as it first seemed when I looked at it. Breaking it down into smaller video chunks will help my ds a lot.
