Eight percent admit to downloading video illegally

Before adding my first post I want to say that congratulations for this great forum.

 

Last week I came across a survey and according to that 80% of Britain, France, Germany and U.S people admit to downloading video illegally from the net. What do you think about this issue? I mean who will win governments or piracy? As you know, torrent site piratebay is a political part in Sweden and already won a seat in European Parliament Elections.

Washington - A court in the United States laid down a 1.9-million-dollar fine against a Minnesota woman who illegally downloaded 24 songs from the internet, CNN reported.

 

 

The trial against Jammie Thomas-Rasset was the first case in the United States for such copyright infringement, CNN quoted her lawyer as saying.

 

The 32-year-old mother of four was shocked by the fine as the price tag for legally downloading the songs that would have cost 99 cents each and planned to appeal, he said.

It is the second trial of the case, after a judge ordered a retrial in 2007. In the first trial, Thomas-Rasset was fined only 220,000 dollars.

 

A spokeswoman of the Recording Industry Association of America said the body was 'pleased' that the jury agreed with the evidence and found the defendant liable, CNN reported.

WOW! Whatever happened to the punishment fitting the crime? She would never have gotten a punishment like this if she had shoplifted those CDs. There must be more to this story, don't ya think?

I read that the other day and just shook my head. Unless this woman is some kind of secret millionaire, it's not like she'll ever actually pay 1.9 million dollars to anyone.

 

I don't know if they were just trying to make a point or what - but if that was the intent, it doesn't seem to be working amongst the people I've seen & heard discussing it. Most of them are laughing at what they see as crazy & pointless.
