Suggestions for Summer Reading 1st-2nd grade?

I'm compiling a summer reading list for my dds 6 and 7.5. I wasn't really happy with the Barnes and Noble program this year, so I proposed to my dds that, if they read the books from my reading lists, I would buy them a book (or two) of their choice. They will read a lot more than this over the summer, but I wanted to make sure they were reading some challenging and quality material in addition to their other fun selections.

Here is what I have come up with so far...additional suggestions are requested ... maybe for some science related literature? Or any others. Thanks in advance!

For dd 7.5 (rising 2nd grader):

1. Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie

2. The Canada Geese Quilt

3. Elizabeth Blackwell, Girl Doctor (Childhood of Famous Americans)

4. Helen Keller (Davidson)

5. A Bear Called Paddington

6. Pocahontas and the Strangers (Bulla)

7. The Fourth of July Story (Dagliesh)

8. Seaman’s Journal: On the Trail with Lewis and Clarke

9. The Mouse and the Motorcycle

10. Magic By the Lake (Half Magic series)

11. Betsy-Tacy (series)

12. Thomas Edison, Young Inventor (Childhood of Famous Americans)

13. The Borrowers

14. Miranda, the Great

15. The Storm (Lighthouse Family series)

For dd 6 (rising 1st grader):

1. Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie

2. Dr. DeSoto

3. The Bravest Dog Ever

4. Cobblestreet Cousins, Special Gifts

5. Cobblestreet Cousins, Some Good News

6. Cobblestreet Cousins, Summer Party

7. Cobblestreet Cousins, Wedding Flowers

8. Magic Treehouse #5

9. Magic Treehouse #6

10. Magic Treehouse #7

11. Helen Keller, Courage in the Dark

12. The True Story of Pocahontas

13. Rookie Biography: Amelia Earhart

Thanks for the suggestions! I do think Ella Enchanted would be a nice family read-aloud this summer.:) We've already read Trumpet of the Swan and I'm saving Charlotte's Web for next year as one of our literature study selections. I'll keep Stuart Little on the list.
