Pamela H in Texas
Kids: 1st graders First, what music curriculum do you use, why, all that jazz? :) Second, does Rod and Staff Music have ANY religious references at all (1st grade samples did not, but....). Julie in MN
I have used Pfiffer House Music and that was pretty fun. (and very inexpensive!) We used one of these sets, too. Good, easy general music ed. If you google, you might want the spelling: Pfeiffer

amtmcm
My DD9 loves music and I feel inadequate to teach it so I bought Calvert Discoveries in Music to use in the fall. It is really geared for K-3, so the silly characters will be a little young for my rising 4th grader, but I previewed a lot of the DVD and the instruction is solid. Here are the topics: String Family Percussion Family Brass Family Woodwind Family Orchestra Conductor Bands Keyboards Intro to Rhythm Rhythm, Beat & Tempo Rhythm & Duration Intro to Melody Melody by Steps & Leaps American Folk Music Songs from other Countries Moving to Music Dramatic Improvisation Dance Instrument Makers Make your own Instrument Tempo & Dynamics Bach & Handel Mozart Beethoven Aaron Copland Singing Together Playing Together Music as Expression Music Tells a Story Music in Religion Review & Summary Children Making Music The DVD introduces each topic in a 10-15 minute lesson and the Teacher Guide provides exercises and further instruction for the parent. I'm not an expert and we haven't used this yet, but I would bet if you used it in 1st grade you could repeat it in 2nd grade. We all know how well young children respond to repetition.
