  1. My advanced 1st grader is doing Astronomy with the junior notebook, and we are stretching it out to cover the entire year. The notebook schedules too much to read in one sitting in my opinion. Dd definitely retains information better if we break the reading up into smaller bites than suggested in the notebook.

  2. We will be doing Bigger soon, and I debated whether to use the science in the guide or Apologia. I decided to start with Bigger's science with the idea that I can switch if it isn't working. I figure I wont be out too much $ if it doesn't fit our needs. I am trying to simplify though so that is mostly what affected my decision.

I am interested to hear what others have to say about the science in Bigger though!

  3. I am not overly fond of the Usborne books either. I have been supplementing with library books a lot this year.

How is she doing with Apologia?

She is doing GREAT with Apologia. We are doing the Junior Notebook with it, and I am amazed at the amount of stuff that she is learning. At first glace, it seems way too much for that age, but even my 4yo enjoys listening to me read it and is picking up a lot from it.

  4. We are doing MFW Adventures this year with my advanced 1st grader, and the included science was not enough for her. She is VERY interested in science though so it may just be us. We ended up dropping it and doing Apologia Astronomy instead. I do plan to do the magnet kit with her though because I think she will have a lot of fun with it.

I should also add that I am not a fan of the Usborne books so that my be why it was a flop for us. I just can't get over the layout.

  5. Thank you all for your responses!

laf512 - Did you find any gaps between McRuffy K and Abeka's 1st grade program? Did you use Abeka's teacher's manual? That thing confuses me!!!

    Thanks,

    Bethany

Abeka starts off with lots of review so dd was able to pick up any new stuff quickly. I used the teacher manual at first, but ditched it somewhere along the way once dd was reading fluently.

  6. I make a "book basket" for HOD. I use the book All Through the Ages by Christine Miller as my guide to choose books by topic and reading level.

Here is a link to book basket list I made for Bigger this year. It only lists the books that I had available to me because I own them or they are in one of the two library systems I use.

    HTH. :001_smile:

Thanks for sharing this! We will be doing Bigger next year, and I was wanting to do a book basket, too!

  7. Well, I had many people tell me that MFW kindergarten was more like preschool so I decided to go with it for our preschool program. I'm just going to do it at a slower pace...three days a week, rather than five. We just started, but I think it will work out great. Looking through it, I agree that it is more of a preschool level than kindergarten.

  8. I probably would not use it because I feel the book basket adds a certain depth to the program that you wouldn't have without it. There are so many good books listed that I couldn't imagine choosing just 10.

I have no idea what I would choose instead though because I feel library access is essential to our homeschooling experience since we thrive on literature rich curriculum.

  9. So far, we have been disappointed in our 4-H experience. It's our first year, and I have no clue what's going on. I've asked questions, but haven't gotten adequate answers. It seems like the only think our Clover Kids get to do is participate in an art project while the rest of the group is having their monthly business meeting. Then they have the chance to go to a day camp twice a year. I thought they got to do projects, but when I asked the leader she said they don't.

I was really excited about 4-H, too, but it seems to be a bust. Dd likes doing the art project, but I'm not sure it's worth it. We can do the same thing at home!

  10. I have the text and free pages but I am thinking about getting this notebook for my son. (When I first used apologia about 8 or 9 years ago these elem books and all these extras didn't exist).

My question: can pages that are skipped be torn out? Would it look unfinished if all the extras aren't done? Thanks for your help.

Some skipped pages can be torn out, but most of them are double sided so it all depends. We don't tear out the skipped pages. I'm not really worried about it looking unfinished though since no one sees it but my dd and me.

  11. I am planning on using MFW Adventures next year, but keep finding myself second guessing my decision. It seems like I see more negative reviews than positive reviews.

I have looked and looked at HOD, but for some reason I am not drawn to it as much as MFW. I think MFW will work better for my family though and I am pretty excited to order it.

I keep telling myself that if it doesnt work out for us its ok, because its only 1st grade!

I could have written this exact post. The only difference is that I've already bought all the materials :tongue_smilie:
