  1. Last night I finished The Lighthouse Keeper's Daughter by Hazel Gaynor. This was my book club's selection for the month. This was a dual timeline following Grace Darling in 1838 when she becomes famous for rescuing people from a shipwreck (this was based on a true story). We also follow Matilda Emmerson in 1938 when she is on a boat sailing to New York because she is pregnant, unmarried, and her parents are sending her away to have the baby. I enjoyed the dual timelines and how eventually the author connected the two. I also enjoyed how this book was focused on each woman and her journey. However, this book was sad. The author seemed a bit gratuitous with death and towards the end I was rolling my eyes because yet another person was dying. I know not all books can have a nice, happy ending all tied up with a bow, but this just felt like too much sadness and despair and things that were meant to be, but never were. It just left me with a feeling of....ugh. (3.5 stars)

  2. Hello everyone! 👋 June is here!

School is officially on break for the summer, so hopefully I can get a lot of good reading in over the summer. I live in Texas and it gets blazing hot here, which means I'll be hibernating....good time for reading! 😜

Feel free to share anything and everything you've been reading lately!

I hope y'all are enjoying your summer! 😎

I didn't quote the book you were referencing but that's how I felt about Demon Copperhead. Everyone thought it was great, so much so that it won the Pulitzer. I get that the topic is important but it was just too bleak for me so I dnf'd it. David Copperfield is one of my favorite Dickens books so I thought I'd like this one. I saw the parallels but where they differed is that Dickens gave us downtrodden but quirky, plucky characters while Kingsolver just gave us downtrodden ones.

My favorite characters in Demon were Angus and June. They seemed like the "light" to counteract some of the dark. I haven't read David Copperfield, so I'm not sure if they'd match up to the quirky/plucky characters you're thinking of, but maybe. I wish there had been more of Angus and June in the book. ☺️

Demon is on my list for this summer. I've never read David Copperfield so I want to read that one first, or maybe at the same time.

I haven't read David Copperfield, but I knew Demon was based on it. I'm not sure it would've changed my opinion of Demon, since my only issue with it was how I connected with the character, but I think it would be interesting to see how the two books compare to each other.

  5. It took me forever, but I finally finished Demon Copperhead. I can’t say it was an enjoyable read, but it was a good book. I definitely went on a long journey with Demon. The thing that bothered me a bit was that I didn’t always feel like I “knew” Demon or connected with the character. Everything was told from his perspective, but it seemed more like him just walking us through everything that happened to him and not his emotions to go along with everything. I’m probably explaining that poorly, but something felt like it was missing. I’m still glad to have read the book. (4 stars)

I’m never going to be able to wrap my brain around a professional 30-something woman spazzing if her crush leans in to kiss her.  I’m pretty sure most 12 year olds don’t act over their first crush like some of the shows portray middle aged women.  It is something that annoys me about k dramas.  That and we joke that if you wear a baseball cap in Korea it makes you unrecognizable and invisible.  My husband calls it the Kent Effect. LOL

We’re watching Crash Course in Romance right now and what you’re saying here reminds of this show. ☺️

  7. DDs and I finished our last read aloud for the school year...Nation by Terry Pratchett. At first I wasn't sure about this one, but it kept growing on me the more we read it. This book had a lot of themes weaved throughout, and I feel like I should read it a few more times to fully grasp all of them.

The story is about an island that is destroyed by a giant wave. There's only one survivor from the village, Mau. A ship has wrecked on the island and again, only one girl has survived, Daphne. Mau and Daphne don't know each other's language and are so foreign to each other, but they are alone and must help each other to survive. Refugees from the wave start arriving and a new nation starts forming.

I didn't love the ending, and Mr. Pratchett knew we the readers wouldn't, which is why the epilogue to the book is comical. As he says, "Thinking. This book contains some. Whether you try it at home is up to you." (4.5 stars)

Y’all. Another DNF. This is so unlike me, I’m worried about my attention span. But I have been *extremely* busy both physically and mentally, so I’ll cut myself some slack.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue just didn’t pull me in, even after 150 pages. Admittedly I had little sympathy for the premise of how she became invisible in the first place, so maybe I lost interest once that was revealed. I dunno. Others say they liked it; I just couldn’t.

I’ll remain super-busy through the end of the month, but once summer truly begins things will slow down and maybe I’ll be more up to sustained reading. Until then I picked up some light historical fiction I hope I’ll be able to jump into and finish.

I read this a few years back. I had high hopes for it, but I found it to be a slog. It was disappointing. I read another book by the same author and didn’t like that one either, so I determined me and that author just don’t click. 😊 I hope you’re able to find something soon that you enjoy!

I finished 'Our Blooming Youth'-- it was fun

I recently watched 'The Biggest Hit' (I really liked this one and it would be OK for tween) and followed the lead in that to 'Its Beautiful Now'-- this one is 50! 1hr episodes long-- lots of family dynamics (the main moms are a bit too emotional for me at times but that it what the skip ahead button is for!)-- but I've laughed and cried... still have 12 episodes to go.

I'm starting to put together a watch list for this summer (I have one more week of classes!).  I have lots of knitting/crocheting to do!

Let me know if you (anyone!) has watched any of the newer 2022-2023 dramas that they would recommend or even some of the older ones that have not been mentioned yet.

Holy crap!!! And here I thought 20 was long. 🤣

  10. Just a quick update…DD and I have finished a few shows:

The King’s Affection - We liked this one, but didn’t love it. I really liked the two lead actors, but I’m not sure I liked them together. The series was also 20 episodes and at times it felt too long. One other thing that bothered me was I think the “big secret” should have been shared a little sooner with a few people because it just didn’t seem right. But overall, we still enjoyed mostly everything.

A Love So Beautiful (the 2020 Netflix version…I think there is a different one on Viki?) - This one was just ok. I liked the supporting characters more than the main couple. I didn’t care for the lead male character (the actor was fine, just not his part). He was really selfish and it was kind of off-putting.

Business Proposal - Thanks for all the heads up on the spicy scenes. I googled them beforehand (thanks @Jann in TX) and I just fast forwarded thru that scene in episode 11. This show has been one of our favorites so I’m glad we watched it. It was so funny, and I really liked all of the relationships in this one…the couples, friends, parents, etc.

We’re currently watching 100 Days My Prince. I think we have about 4 episodes left and so far, so good.

I keep seeing Doctor Cha recommended on Netflix, so I’ve added that to my list, but I don’t think all of the episodes are out. It looks interesting, so can’t wait to check that one out. 😊 I hope all of you are watching good stuff!

I very much enjoyed Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez. This was a slow burn romance featuring two emergency room doctors which made me laugh a lot but also covered serious issues like depression, anxiety, organ transplants, and miscarriages. The hero ... gasp ... wrote letters to the heroine which was fun. I foresee reading this again and would recommend.

I put a hold on this a few weeks ago, and it just became available from Libby yesterday. I’ve enjoyed several of Abby Jimenez’s books, so I’m looking forward to this one!

Coming back to this…I finally got around to reading this book and finished it last night. It was longer than I expected! (Over 400 pages, which is kind of lengthy for a contemporary romance) The fake dating trope was fun, and I loved all of the crazy family members (especially the cursing parrot and the three legged dog). I didn’t love some of the stuff at the end and there was just too much miscommunication that kind of dragged on, but overall I really enjoyed the story. (4stars)

  12. Last night I finished reading The Lager Queen of Minnesota by J. Ryan Stradal. The story follow two sisters who stop speaking to each other after their father passes away and leaves his inheritance to only one of the sisters, Helen. The other sister, Edith, does okay for a while, but hits hard times along the way. Helen ends up building a somewhat successful beer brewery. I enjoyed the family dynamics/relationships, but the beer stuff was okay...I don't like beer, so it wasn't super interesting to me! The ending felt a bit rushed. (3.5 stars)

I DNFed The Secret History by Donna Tartt. It's a dark academia book about a group of students who murder one of their fellow students. Every character is terrible and unlikeable and I'm not in the mood for that right now. Plus it felt so much like If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio. I'm trying to be better about DNFing books if they aren't working for me instead of slogging through them. Plus I am overwhelmed with library holds. I picked up 4 books from the library on Tuesday and and now I have 3 more available.

This reminded me of The Atlas Six…It’s not often that I despise all of the characters in a book, but I really did not like any of them, or the story either. 🤷‍♀️ I struggle with DNFing books, but I’m trying to be better about it, especially since my TBR shelf keeps growing. 😂

Yes, there are some with more mature content-- on Netflix avoid 'Nevertheless'... there are also several that visit teen suicide (can open discussions but you/parent should have heads up).

There are several popular ones with some short but INTENSE kiss scenes (no skin or maybe just the guy's muscular chest)-- Business Proposal episode 7 (you'll never see glasses the same way!).

Good news is there will be plenty that you can enjoy watching together!

Thanks for the heads up…we were thinking about starting Business Proposal next actually. If it’s just kissing, that should be ok, but I’ll have to think about it.

  16. Just thought of another question…

So far I’ve noticed that the romance stuff has all been very PG…is this pretty common throughout all shows, or are there some that have more sexually explicit content? As I mentioned before, DD12 has been watching with me, so I just wanted to know what to watch out for.
