  1. it's called a nexus card - and *everyone* in the car must have one in order to use that lane.   if you go by boat or air - you must have a passport.

    almost

Nexus is for expedited travel. You don't need a nexus card to drive across the border if you have either a passport card or a passport book.  Theoretically nexus cards just make crossing the border faster. I say theoretically because sometimes the lines all go equally slow :tongue_smilie:   You can use a nexus card in lieu of a passport card when driving, or in lieu of a passport book when flying between Canada/US.

This is an old article that explains the different cards etc. The pdf on the border/customs website is still dated 2009, so I don't think anything has changed since it was written.

  2. Currently, everything they attend is a 15 minute walk or drive.

I think the furthest I've ever had to go on a consistent basis was 30 minutes twice a day i.e 2 hours a day all together  , during the summer, because the kids' swim team had to use a different pool. That was a bit of a pain.

  3. 5 kids.  We've never had more than 3 bedrooms. First house was 1150 sq ft. (1600 after we enclosed the carport).  It was cozy, but doable.

Moved, down to 4 kids, 3 bedrooms ~ 2600 sq ft. (includes garage and bonus room above) on an acre ~ this was a good size

Moved again, still 4 kids and 3 bedrooms ~ 1050 sq ft. apartment.  Definitely tight!

  4. You gals are GOOD with describing all this stuff!!! I just don't think of/can pinpoint exact stuff like this. All I can say is I've had Odysseys since 2006, love them! Now we have a 2011, no cameras 😞. I don't think I have problems with too much sun? I mean, it feels fine to me. Also in the Valley of the Sun. Snow? Dh had to drive us through a BAD storm once, and he managed. I have never driven in snow, at all...so I can't give an opinion on that.

I live in a high snow, but extremely flat area, no problems ever.  We do put snow tires on the van in the winter.

  5. This is probably going to sound harsh, but if I hadn't enforced these things I don't think I'd have stayed sane while mine were little.

    1. No talking before Mom has her morning coffee.  I reminded them that if they wanted a pleasant and engaged Mom, they needed to let Mom wake up in a quiet house.  They mostly accommodated me ;)

    2. Daily, enforced quiet time after lunch, for at least an hour.

    3. Outside play time by themselves, i.e. not with Mom.

My 12yo and my 17yo still like to talk my ears off.  When it gets to be too much I just point blank tell them that they need to stop and be still; my ears need a rest.

  6. Our Honda has a blind spot over the shoulder and the frame where the passenger side door meets the sliding door. But, I think most minivans are going to have a blind spot somewhere. It is just different, so I have to be mindful. Also, ours has the backup camera but no beeps! I am terrified that I am going to back into something after driving vehicles with proximity warning beeps for so long. I think we've had the thing for a year, maybe two, and I am still paranoid. But, I also switched over to bifocals after we got this van so that makes me nervous.

    Agree on the blind spot.

And I DO have an issue with the sun.  I'm short(ish), 5'3" and I keep a cowboy hat in the van because the visor does not come down low enough to block the sun.  I never had this problem in my old van (GMC) because it had a higher seat and a double visor.

  7. Hi from Omaha! We are having a great time at the swimming trials. My dd1 swam Sunday in the 400 IM. She swam well, only the second time under the qualifying time :). She tied for 50th.

A time trial tomorrow and the 200 fly on Wednesday!

Good for her!  What a grueling event to swim, but so fun to watch!

  8. I haven't really thought about this before.

If I were to go into hospice right now, I would not want visitors except for those that I'm really comfortable with. I don't like having visitors in my daily, everyday healthy life either.  I would want to be able to say good-bye to my spouse and children, my parents and my sister.  I "think" I would want to see my priest.  Other than that, no.

I've told my husband that I don't care what he does with my body etc., or what memorials he holds.  Those things are for the living, not the dead, and he can do what he wants, or not.

  9. So, I have a question to those of you posting in opposition to what I've asked. Do you not view the Episcopal church as a Christian denomination? Or, is only those who aren't as liberal and are welcoming to LGBT? Or is it something else? I'm just trying to figure all this out and am confused by some posters and their comments.

It sure seems like it, eh?

Some of my evangelical friends became quite concerned for us when we started attending the Anglican Church.  They were sure that we were no longer Bible believing Christians  :confused1:  :glare:  :smash:

Anyway, my experience has been that I've found more authentic, living out their faith Christians in my Anglican parish, than I ever did in any of the evangelical churches.
