  1. Seconding the things that Lori has marked with **

We called the International Wildlife Museum the Stuffed Animal Museum :) The butterfly exhibit is amazing. It's a great way to pass a hot day.

The Children's Museum is not worth the money and neither is Tohono Chul Park.

The zoo is well done. They just got some baby elephants and lion cubs. There are some really fun pictures on their FB page. It's located at a huge park complex with a covered swimming pool, ponds and playgrounds.

If you or your kids are interested in Geronimo etc. the Ft. Lowell Museum is small, but fun. The hours that it's open are a little wonky so check before you go. When we told them that we were homeschoolers they let us in for free :) It's also located at a park w/ a pool, playground, duck pond, walking trails & man-made stream.

Do go up Mt. Lemmon. The views are awesome. The plus side of this is that it's much cooler :D

Sabino Canyon is another must see. You can take a tram ride to the top or just hike. If the water is running, using the dam as a slide is a favorite pasttime :)

Something that I didn't see mentioned is the Kitt Peak National Observatory.

A bit of advice. Make sure that everyone has full water bottles everytime you leave the house/hotel. A body dries out quickly in the desert in the summer.

ETA: That the advice that AndyJoy gave you about the Desert Museum is spot on. This is what we always did when my parents would visit. It also held true for the zoo. Not sure if that's the case anymore. I haven't been in awhile.

  2. He

-takes care of the chickens (only 2 now, since a dog got into the yard)

-trims the yard w/ weed wacker when needed

-folds and puts away own laundry

    -takes out compost

    -takes out trash and recylables

-makes his bed if reminded ;)

    -keeps his bedroom tidy

-he's basically an agreeable little fellow, and likes being helpful, so most times he does whatever is asked w/o complaining much. Things like cleaning the bathroom, raking yard, mowing, sweeping porches etc.

Now my 7yo....don't get me started :tongue_smilie:

  3. I also know that I have a very hard time getting anything shoved all the way down that spine pocket without having it crumple up on me, and of course, I really, really want to have those spines labeled, even if they weren't pretty!

I bought clear contact paper to take care of this problem. I make a label for my spine in power point, and cut it so that it overlaps the edges by about 1/2", enough to go past the fold. Then I cut the contact paper about an inch wider on each side. The labels that I made for my 2" TOG binders are still going strong, and still look pretty, 10 years later :)

They remind me of the pictures on ABQmoms' blog, except there are no white borders.

  4. :iagree: my husband thinks I nuts, I tried SL LA a good 5 times (maybe more) and am thinking of trying it again when dd tackles the grade 4/5 readers. What's the definition of insanity...

Anyway, for me it was the LA IG that had me sending it back time and time again. It was just a bunch of words with no cohesiveness. The examples of writing in the IG looked like a professional writer wrote them and in no way would equal a normal childs writing at that level...best to leave them out. I never got a feel for where we were going. The spelling portion is a joke in my opinion. I could go on and on but I will just agree with everything all the non SL LA people said.

I'm in that crazy house with you  But this year I'll have an 11yo and a 13yo using Core 4, so I think that the writing assignments might be perfect. I'm thinking about pushing that button before tonights' deadline, since I own the last "non-writing intensive" version and I don't want to buy the new combined IG. We will continue using R&S for grammar.

  5. I "think" it has to do with the fact that it gets revised, as in completely overhauled, every couple of years. So you might hate it and drop it, and then they revise it, but you already don't use it anymore. So maybe you'd like what they've done to it, but you don't use it anymore and already have a bad taste in your mouth, kwim? I'm in this camp. Tried their LA way back when it was REALLY, REALLY hard, like high school level in 5th grade, hated it, then they revised it, it was still challeging, but in a good way and my son thrived, but then they changed it again. Hated it, again. Then they changed it again so that it seems like it's mostly dictation and writing instruction. Of course, now they're changing it yet again. So who knows?

  6. 3 is definitely a step up from 2, in my experience. My daughter did R&S 2 at age 6, did a different curriculum at 7, then FLL 3 at 8, and has done R&S 4 this year at age 9...officially 4th grade and reading/spelling etc at 5th and above....it HAS not been too easy, but she has been pretty facile with it. I would look closely at 3 first before skipping, as although I felt the 2nd grade grammer was really truely 2nd grade level, after that they do seem more advanced.

    Agreeing :iagree:

  7. I got mine at Costco. However I quickly found that I didn't like having all the pages in sheet protectors. For one I actually do like to write in my IG's and 2. when the pages are in protectors you can't see the weekly tabs (i.e. week 1, week 2 etc.) That bugged me. My solution, because I had older children that needed to use the IG as well, was to keep a small working binder and only put those pages in plastic each week. It was still a bit time consuming, but before I did that the kids kept ripping the holes & I was having to add those reinforcers. Of course this was before DE existed and I could just print out a new page if I wanted to.

  8. how do you get yourself out of this?

I can't ever put my dd's in school. Dd12 gets sick from the lights, dd9 - never.

I feel trapped! I just don't want to be responsible for anyone's education anymore. But I know I have to be.

I have been at this for 14 years. I never, ever intended to homeschool! I will be 50 next year and I'm just TIRED.

How does one get out of a slump like this??!!!!!

I absolutely cherish the time I have with dd12. I will cherish it because I know how quickly the time flies by! I love having her home with me. I just don't want to be a teacher anymore. Not in the academic sense. She has some sort of learning issue, if only pretty severe ADD. I do not do rigorous, classical studies with her like I did with my boys. She is totally average and I am fine with that. I just find teaching her EXHAUSTING. I am throwing in the towel with formal grammar studies. She has had more than ANY ps kid, and she has done more diagramming than any ps kid ever will. They don't even diagram in ps anymore. And spelling? PLEASE tell me there is a good spelling program on CD rom.

Dd9 does online school so that is easier for me.

Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh. I really hope I can snap out of this. I have been feeling it for at least a couple of years but I don't think I have openly admitted it to anyone. Not even here.

:grouphug: I think year 14 is just hard. more :grouphug: Come to think of it, so was year 7. I don't know why.

I hated last year (#14). Felt like I had failed all my children. Regardless of the fact that oldest had graduated and was doing well, and 14yo was right on track to enter high school. But my 12yo....so tiring. She has learning issues and it makes the teaching hard, and sometimes it sucks the joy right out of it.

But this year. I'm having so much fun :) OK, not everyday ;) but overall it's been a good year, and if I had to give up homeschooling next year I'd be sad. My stb 13yo has turned a huge corner, my 7yo is finally reading, and my 10yo has decided that school isn't that bad afterall. Go figure.

Give it until the middle of the summer and then make a decision. Maybe things won't look so bleak by then.

  9. The bolded is incorrect. The new edition has been revised and expanded. It is not just a reprint

I suspect that this is the book that is scheduled though, which does not look like it's been revised. Of course we won't know for sure until we see the new catalog.

  10. Are you saying you can no longer buy just an IG from SL after April 2nd? Unless that's the case, I don't really think it is different than TOG, though I am not a TOG expert by any means. I'm thinking you now have to buy the books for bible and LA if you want to buy a core, but surely, you can still just buy an IG and the books you can't find elsewhere?

    Lisa

No. That's not what I'm saying. My original answer was simply to point out that in regards to language arts (i.e. what they cover in the grammar stage) TOG & SL are quite different.
