  1. If you understand what HSLDA is, and what is not, and still want to give them your money, you might be swayed by the situation of whatever state you live in. More "homeschooling hostile" states might influence you to join. Here, in Texas, I would not waste the money on HSLDA. (Nor would I join them because they are not an insurance plan for possible problems. HSLDA makes zippo guarantee that they ever will help a family, no matter what the situation may be. They pick-and-choose only the cases which advance their own agendum.)

Wow. I so did not know that. I'll have to rethink when it comes time to renew :(

  2. HSLDA had a free trial membership for a short time this summer, so we joined. Our first official year starts in the fall. It's now time to renew. It's a lot of money and I'm not sure if it is worth it. Opinions pro and con would be helpful.

    Thanks!

I view it as insurance. We live in Virginia, and in their last magazine, there was an issue in the county we used to live in :scared:...we're only 2 counties over now. I agree that it's a chunk of money, and I really hope we never need to call on them, but if someone ever comes knocking on my door, I can say "Let me call my lawyer" :)

  3. That sounds interesting. Are there other publishers to choose from on the site? How detailed do you make your lesson plans?

I'll admit, I have never done this. I own software, and have briefly started it in the past....but never kept up with it. I'm normally an extremely organized individual (too much so if you ask my husband), but I'm terrible when it comes to planning for school. Unfortunately, I think my lack of preparation makes me entirely too stressed out during the year so I'd really like this year to be different.

I spent some time on the HST forums and found a link to the yahoo groups. There are soooooo many lesson plans out there that people have shared. I would recommend that you go look on the website and spend some time looking around :) Like I mentioned, I just bought this today, so I'm not the one to answer your questions fully ;)

  4. I agree. I would let her know too that being kicked out is scary as h&*^ BUT it is a far more difficult to overcome an abortion. Like I mentioned in my earlier post I was kicked out the day I found out I was pg. My mom told me from the time I was 13 on I would be. I was 20 and a university student not a teen but she was true to her word and I was out on my a$$. It was scary, it did make things harder BUT it was something easy to remedy in a very short time. The end result was that it made me a better mother because I was forced to care for my son 100% on my own. WIth this being her motivator to have an abortion, I can almost guarantee she will resent her mother for the rest of her life, likely move out within the year anyway and their relationship will always be damaged. I would rather she be kicked out and live with friends or the father until she can make arrangements on her own and have that child. Right now she is running only on emotions not on logic.

:grouphug: I'm so sorry that you had to endure that. I clicked on your blog link, and your family is beautiful.

  5. :iagree:HST is what I use as well. I started with the basic edition, which is free, but soon decided to upgrade to the HST+. You should check it out at www.homeschooltracker.com.

I just bought this today, and am very overwhelmed by it all. I am confident that I'll get it figured out. My favorite thing is the yahoo groups that you can import lesson plans from :) I will still have to make several of my own, but Saxon, Apologia, and Wordly Wise were all easily imported today :)

  6. I don't think it would necessarily make you a bad person, but would you be prepared to be in the middle of the fallout that might ensue? What if her parents don't even know she's pregnant? What if they react very badly? You could be opening a whole bigger can of worms than you anticipated.

I'm not saying not to do it, but... I'd seriously consider how you'd deal with the consequences, and be prepared to do so.

What if her parents did not threaten to kick her out, but that is what she is assuming? Tough, tough, tough call. I have no idea what I would do if a friend of my child was in a similar situation. I have already told my boys that they ought not to have s*x outside of marriage, but IF they get a girl pregnant we would be supportive.

  7. Bump...Anyone else have an opinion? I asked my daughter this morning, and she said she'd do almost anything to get out of history. But she didn't say she really wanted to take Chinese.

If she didn't say she really wants to take Chinese, I'd go with History. Chinese, in my opinion, is a difficult language to learn if you're not motivated and wanting to learn it (to me, learning the Chinese "alphabet" or whatever term they use for it would be HARD :001_smile:) PLUS, you have the out of pocket expense for an online class.

  8. I have been here many times and I honestly don't think it is a hard decision. Hard to experience, yes. Painful to go through, yes. But KNOWING when is not that hard if you are willing to be honest with yourself. You have to put your pet first before your feelings and fear of loss. Look into your pets eyes. Does he have a good quality of life? Is he in pain? Pain that can not be medicated and is not going to get better means it's time. Constant diarrhea that can not be controlled means it's time. Dull eyes and no joy of life and a vet who says there is nothing more to be done means it's time. I'm so sorry for your family and especially DH.

    I totally agree with this.

blessings to you and your family as you walk this difficult path.

  9. I just put them on my computer so the kids can listen to them; don't bother with the iPod.

Oh, but I'm lusting for an iPod (specifically the iTouch) for several reasons...mostly the cool apps that you can get.

You do make an excellent point about just putting them on the computer :) I love practical ideas :D

  10. Just wanted to let you know...Lightning Lit will give you literary analysis, but it isn't a writing program, per se. (That is, it doesn't teach writing.) As you say, another example of using something here, something there!

That's why we're also using Write Shop. A friend started teaching it in the Spring, and is continuing in the Fall, which makes me very, very happy :) I have to say, I saw a HUGE improvement in the boys' writing after just a couple of weeks.

  11. Does anyone have any suggestions for 9th grade English?? We are going to use Wordly Wise 9 for sure because we love WW. I am considering putting my own plans together because I specifically want to cover short stories, poetry, literary terms, grammar, novels and essay writing. I don't know of a program out there that will cover all this. Also, my son is still a little weak with dictionary skills (a mental block of some sort) and some grammar. Any suggestions?

We are doing a mix of Lightning Literature (British Medieval), Wordly Wise, Jensen's Grammar/Punctuation and Write Shop.

  12. (I don't think a rescue dog should have been bred, especially to a different breed, especially when the dog's human dad didn't want puppies. But it's nice of you to take one of the puppies.)

    Happy bonding. :)

Just a guess...but the dog was probably pregnant when she was rescued...

We've ended up fostering several pregnant cats that way and have had the opportunity to foster a pregnant dog, but it didn't work out as we already had the pregnant cat :)

  13. Nope. I tried to post the games on the sale board. When that didn't go right through, I came over here to ask whether anyone had encountered this.

It's probably a whole R-rated reputation of Clue that I wasn't aware of. You know: "Miss Scarlet in the Coservatory with the rope . . .."

No advice, but your Miss Scarlet comment made me LOL ;)

  14. I'm very jealous. We were unable to work it in this year :( We're at the other end of the state of VA, and it's a long haul for us to get there (6 hours), but we loved going when we went 2 years ago. It's a great size convention.....big enough to have big names, but small enough that you're not overwhelmed :)

    Blessings,

  15.

I was looking at this on RR and wondering if it was good.

Regarding the Learnables. We are on lesson 6, and so far the boys only listen to the tape, with no repeating. They simply look at pictures and hear the German spoken. It starts really basic (man, child, table), but has moved on to full sentences. There are 10 lessons like this (I think!) in the Learnables book, then we'll move on to Basic Structures. I'm not sure how that book works :)

My very loose plan is to have us work through Basic Structures 1 and see if the boys REALLY want to continue learning German. At that point, we'll probably enroll in the Potter's School. They use Deutsch Aktuell Level 1 and their tutition runs $460/semester.

There is another online option, by Oklahoma State University http://germanonline.okstate.edu/ which, now that I'm actually looking at it, runs $389 a course. So we'll see which route we go if they decide they love German.

    Blessings,

    Rita
