  1. Any update on when the Medieval World guide will be ready? I am hoping to use it with my freshman daughter in the fall.  I LOVE the book, and could probably make a go of it on my own, but a guide would be so helpful.

    brookspr,

We're hard at work on that one right now! We HOPE...not promise, unfortunately, but HOPE...to have it ready for y'all to use in the fall when the schoolyear starts. What we can do, though, is post a free PDF copy of the first ten or twelve chapters...we will be doing that in the late summer, to tide people over while the printing process continues. When we do that, we'll announce it on the forums, and I'll ask the PHP Facebook fairy to mention it on his/her/its/their page as well.

    Thanks for your interest!

  2. It says, "classes designed to help you teach your student in the classical tradition."

Is it for us parents, then?

Walking-Iris...sorry if that was unclear. These are classes for the student...as in, the student interacting with a teacher, via online lectures/email/discussions/chat. So, we hope that it will be a helpful service for the parent who's assembling their child's education, but it's not "a class for parents" in that sense.

  3. Hi all! Justin from Peace Hill Press here. Yes, the Well-Trained Mind Academy is a real thing--we're launching this fall! The www.wtmacademy.com site is a landing page where you can get some preliminary information, and where you can be added to our notification list, to be the first to hear about course offerings, registration, pricing, etc. I'm sure you'll also be hearing about it here on the Forums.
    We're pretty stoked about this.

The Academy is also on Facebook now at www.facebook.com/WTMAcademy.

  4. If this were used for high school history, would this be a year long curriculum? Or are the three History of the Ancient/Renaissance/Medieval World books designed to all be used together as one World History curriculum?

    Grantmom,

The Ancient World book would take a year on its own. Trying to get through Ancient/Medieval/Renaissance books in one year would probably be too ambitious.

  5. Hi Erin, sorry i didn't reply sooner. The material, especially the "how-to-teach" stuff, is almost all the same. The newer recordings have better audio quality than the old ones, and they also include mentions of our newer writing books (including Writing With Skill), which had not yet been published when the 2009 recordings were made.
If you have the 2009 writing lectures, you probably don't need the 2012 ones.

  6. Hello ErinD,

The following lectures currently for sale on our site were recorded in 2012:

--A Plan for Teaching Writing: Focus on the Elementary Grades

--A Plan for Teaching Writing: Focus on the Middle Grades

--A Plan for Teaching Writing: Focus on the High School Years

--The Well-Prepared Student: How to Get Ready for the High School Years

  7. Hi all,

A month or two ago, we released the Study and Teaching Guide for the History of the Ancient World. The map exercises in that book can be done using the maps contained in "The History of the Ancient World." But some astute customers pointed out that if your student is reading "H.O.T.A.W." on a Kindle, he won't be able to write on (or trace) those maps!
In response to this need, we've created a little PDF pack of 59 maps, using only the ones that are referenced in the map exercises. Here it is, ready to download for just $3.99. Hopefully that will help those of you who are using the Kindle version.

  8. I've started reading through the guide. Doing the map work will be very difficult for those who have the Kindle edition of HOTAW, however. Any suggestions for where to get these maps? Perhaps make them available separately like student pages are for so many of the other products? Including them in the guide itself would be great, but I suppose it is too late for that.  :)

thewaka, thanks to your suggestion and others like it, we created a Map Supplement, for people who have the Kindle version of the textbook but still want to do the Map Exercises in the Study Guide. It took us a little while to wrangle all the PDFs, but here it is.

  9. Hi Melissa,

Sorry that you weren't able to use this with your Ds's. Yes, we are working on a Study & Teaching Guide for the History of the Medieval World. It won't be in stores by January, but if you send an email to info AT peacehillpress DOT com, we'll put you on a list of folks to send preliminary versions to, in january. There's no charge, since it's not a finished product, but your feedback and suggestions would be very helpful to us!

  10. Hi all,

The Study and Teaching Guide for the History of the Ancient World is now available for purchase on our site. Amazon should be shipping the book soon, too (it takes a bit longer to complete their warehouse process).

    Quick Description...

Susan Wise Bauer's "The History of the Ancient World" is widely used in advanced high-school history classes, as well as by home educating parents. This Study and Teaching Guide, designed for use by both parents and teachers, provides a full curriculum with study questions and answers, critical thinking assignments, essay topics, instructor rubrics, and test forms. Explanations for answers and teaching tips are also included.

Designed by historian and teacher Julia Kaziewicz, in cooperation with Susan Wise Bauer, makes "The History of the Ancient World" more accessible to parents & teachers.

Note, since some folks had asked: The first half of the book is for the instructor. The student's pages, in the back half, are perforated.

SAMPLES of the curriculum can be found on this page.

  11. Hi all,

We've sent the "Study & Teaching Guide for the History of the Ancient World" to the printers, but while we're waiting for the physical book, we've now started selling it as a downloadable PDF, here. Remember, you can see a sample on this page.

For each chapter of Susan Wise Bauer's "The History of the Ancient World" he Study & Teaching Guide provides review questions and answers, ID's, map exercises, essay prompts and tips for helping the student think critically about the history presented in the chapter.

  12. Peace Hill Press is proud to announce that Writing With Skill, Level 2, as well as its accompanying workbook, are now available for purchase on our webstore. The books are in our warehouse, just waiting for you and your young writer!

Remember that samples are available at: http://www.peacehillpress.com/samples.html

If you pre-ordered, we called you last week to complete your order, and the books are on their way to you.

Amazon should have the books very soon (they work on their own timetable, which they don't always share with us, and which we think has something to do with the movements of the tides, Pisces being in the Seventh House, and the entrails of pigeons). Other bookstores and retailers will be getting the books in the next week or two.

I'll try to stick around this thread to answer questions.

Thanks for your patience. We think you're going to love the books.

  13. When will this be ready for purchase?

We're thinking it will take about a month for the books to be in warehouses and ready to sell (and of course the downloadable PDF will be available before that). Could be a bit sooner...we'll post updates on Facebook as we have more specific information. These first five chapters should keep your student busy for the next month or so.
