  1. We opted to adopt our then baby granddaughter rather than become guardians because after consulting with our attorney we realized that she needed full protection from her unbalanced, self-serving and emotionally led, drug addicted birth mother (our former dil). Having the child become our adopted daughter put us in full charge the situation and we have never regretted it. If we'd opted to become guardians, everything could have been pulled out from under us at any given time. We just couldn't live with that.

We went from being Nana & Papa to Mama & Daddy and have never looked back.

  2. Thanks, ladies. We have an outlet mall near the beach about an hour's drive from here that has a Coldwater Creek. I did buy an amazing sweater poncho there last year for a bargain price, but I didn't look extensively at their other clothes. I'll have to do that next time I'm there.

Although I do wear jeans, the clothes I need the most are for teaching at the private school where I work. I have to wear slacks or trousers instead of jeans, plus I need to look professional. I'm an art teacher, so that means I can be a bit more expressive if I want though. Love that part too. :)

  3. I used to buy Elizabeth brand clothing because I just loved the quality. I'm not a terribly obese woman, but I have a full figure and like to wear separates that can be layered, and I like things that are made and fit really well. Elizabeth was all of that for me, and I would usually buy off season to save money. Another brand that I really loved was Silhouettes, which was mail order only and then available online. Their quality was always good and I loved the variety of styles they offered. Up until just a couple of years ago or so, most of my clothing was from these two places, plus some pieces I found through Penneys.

Unfortunately, Elizabeth Claiborne sold her company before she passed away and the current lines are no longer what they used to be. Silhouettes is also producing a much lower quality product, and that's when I can even find anything that they offer. They must have sold out too. So now I'm shopping here and there, trying to find the type of clothing I prefer and can afford. I've been losing weight and am trying to build up my professional wardrobe as I can afford to do it.

I've bought a couple of things from QVC (Denim & Co.) at the suggestion of a friend, and they're okay, but I really miss the quality of clothing I used to buy. I'd love to shop at Nordstrom's, but I just can't afford to anymore.

Any suggestions for me? Where do you shop?

Thanks for any tips you may have to offer.

  4. Please don't use glue! If you want to go to the trouble to create such a nice, detailed piece, use quality art materials that will last.

First, start with the right surface. I would use something like this, and obviously you'd need three.

Then, I'd build the raised surface with modeling paste.

Finally, I'd paint it with acrylic paint.

    Have fun!

  5. Not being there for your own child's birthday is like telling them that their life isn't important to you. We need to shower love on our precious children, and let them know that they are indeed important and valued. My own children would have been devastated if one of their parents skipped the date, and so would I.

My guess is that the parent in question was not brought up with this in mind, so it's now an opportunity to help teach them about being considerate and also being good role models.

  6. I stopped consuming sugar, white flour and milk in June and have dropped nearly 20 lbs. so far. I mostly eat meat, eggs and veggies with very limited quantities of whole grains such as brown rice and when I eat bread I usually go with sprouted wheat or a special whole grain type such as Dave's Killer bread. I drink almond milk instead of dairy, but I do eat cheeses very, very sparingly. Arrowroot or potato starch works for me as a thickener when needed for sauces, and I have switched over to brown rice pasta. I also eat supplements and herbal foods from Sunrider.

Just giving up sugar and white flour alone has made a huge, huge difference in my life. I feel better than I have in literally decades. For one thing, I used to have to take a nap every afternoon, but now I hardly think about it.

  7. I missed 4.

....I also didn't know Maimonides, and couldn't remember which religion went with the Dalai Lama.

    Me too!

Hey, I thought that agnostics believe the world was created by God, but that he stepped back and let it go on without any more involvement. Where did I get that idea? Hmmmmmm....And along with that i just hit the wrong button and immediately realized it. Nirvana is a Buddhist belief, not Hindu.

So anyway, I'm tickled that I got a 28. Not bad for an old lady.

  8. We were loyal fans of TT, but dd was not holding on to concepts very long and so we needed to go back to the spiral method that Saxon utilizes. Since making the change dd has completed 76 and is now nearly done with 87 and her understanding of math is vastly, vastly improved. She watches a DIVE video and then moves on to her lessons in the book. Dh is supplementing with tutoring from the book as well, and so with the combination of all three my dd has made a HUGE turn around from where she was 2 years ago. Saxon is a solid program.

We're going to move dd in to Algebra I very shortly, but this time she's going to watch Art Reed videos instead of DIVE - just for a change of pace. Both video programs are extremely helpful in supporting the lessons in the book. In response to that part of your post, no the videos don't replace the lesson book. They offer supplemental support that is engaging and helpful.

  9. I've been off it since June 1st and I've never felt better in my life. Whenever I see tempting sugary treats, all I have to do is tell myself, "Turkish Delight" and all urges disappear.

Years ago I was sugar free for several months, then slipped back into bad habits after eating one slice of cake. Even though it made me sick, I just kept eating things that I knew I shouldn't. I remember well how much I regretted those choices and how I felt powerless to let it go. Now I'm finally at the place where I know I need to stay in order to be healthy. I think I have more strength now to get back on track if I did have a little dessert treat, but the memory of how awful it makes me feel will more than likely keep me from indulging very often, if at all.

  10. When I remarried 17 years ago I reclaimed my maiden name and started using it as my middle name, then added my new last name (no hyphens). I did this legally and no longer use my original middle name. For me, it was a matter of personal preference. I missed my maiden name, and as soon as I took it back I actually felt like me again - even with my new married name at the end.

I think in this era women are doing whatever they want to do with their name. My bff went through a divorce, took back her maiden name and when she eventually remarried decided to leave her name as it was. For her, like me, it is an identity thing.

  11. We have allergies to dust in the family plus an elderly grandmother with COPD living with us, and I really need to upgrade to a better vacuum cleaner. Money is pretty tight, so I'm going to have to save up for it. I'm looking at and seriously considering a Dyson DC39 Animal canister vac, as I prefer canisters over upright models, especially since we have stairs and I find a canister to be more versatile in reaching areas.

Does anyone have this type of vacuum? If so, how do you like it? Is there anything out there comparable to this, but with a lower price tag?

Thanks in advance for your input.

  12. AHG is a really great organization and I highly recommend it. Each chapter does have a personality of its own though, and so there may be requirements that differ in each of them. Be sure to check out the fine print before committing your dd, as you may or may not be able to participate fully as the rules dictate for them.

For us it didn't work out because of the very high and rigid expectation for parent involvement. As a working mom who also homeschooled and was very active in other community volunteering, it was not realistic for me to take part in as much as our particular chapter demanded. We ended up having issues, and so sadly it was not a good fit for our family.

    Lucinda

  13. Would something like this be too "cutty-pastey" and not enough fine arts?

There are models for the Coliseum and the Parthenon.

Thanks! That's pretty close to what I have in mind, except i'm planning for students to draw out their own designs and build them. These models might come in handy though, so I'm glad you shared them.

I'd love to have pictures as examples for my students so they can see what others have done as they explore ideas. At any rate, I'm going to jump in and make one in advance so I can have my own example. This should be a fun project.

    Blessings,

    Lucinda

  14. Thank you so much for the suggestion. Legos would be awesome, but unfortunately I have to go about it using fine arts methods because this is for a group of students at a private classical school. I think that using card stock, glue, tape & perhaps even thread we might be able to make it work.

Anyway, I brought the idea here because I thought that with the large, diverse group of homeschool families here, someone would have done or seen something like this.

    Blessings,

    Lucinda
