Is there a reason that Abeka's handwritting book is 250+ pages long and every other company I look at is only 95-176 pages?! My brain really wants to complete the whole book, it helps me feel better... And I really like Abeka's, though dd does not.... Is there something similar but different? We are using their manuscript and would like something that offers a transition book.

Did I answer everything on the other thread? Haha?
Why did you choose Letters and Sounds and Spelling (and not Language 1)? I was thinking of just using just Language and L&S. Im sure it wont matter in the long run but just wondering if maybe I am missing something!
-
For first grade Abeka phonics, we use the Letters and Sounds 1 book, the Spelling 1 book, the Handbook for Reading, and four or five of the readers. FWIW, Abeka has a very strong phonics program.
ETA: I own the teachers manual, but I absolutely do not need it. I basically look at the Letters and Sounds workbook page to see what special sound is being taught and find the coordinating page in the Handbook for Reading.
Wow - thanks! This answers my question I just posted :)
OP - I bought AAR 1 and Abeka k5 for my daughter and returned the AAR1 - it was too much work and honestly, we like workbooks! My daughter LOVES her phonics abeka books. The way Abeka teachers 'special sounds' was easier for me to understand instead of other programs out there. I could never figure out the upside down 'e'...

For those who have used Abeka phonics/reading in first grade did you use ALL the readers? We used their K5 book and readers (almost all of them) but 1st grade seems like A LOT and I am wondering if I really need to purchase all of them... I would like to someday get past their readers and let dd choose other books but maybe I am ahead of myself?
So.... Should I just get the workbooks and a few of the readers or would you do the workbooks and all ten? Also.... did you use the teachers manual? We did not use it for k5 and dd is doing well, IMO, but do you think it is needed in 1st grade?
Thanks!

I had that happen on doxy. It took at least a month or maybe a few to regain my full sense of taste, but eventually it did come back. I was only on the doxy for a few days; the taste thing freaked me out so I stopped taking it (NOT for Lyme).
That is crazy! The doxy really messed up my eyes... just while I was on it, things were so blurry (I have perfect eye sight normally) and could not see anything clearly. Did you notice that?

I can not seem to find this... maybe it does not exist for 1st grade (or around that age) but would LOVE if anyone had any textbook/reader ideas for history. I am looking for just one book (not a bunch) that we can enjoy on the couch once and a while next year... with lots of pictures and places for discussions. Though I like Abeka's Science Readers their History kills me though... I like the idea of Christian Liberty Press but can not get over the cartoon drawings. Even if you know of a good history book, not text book, that would give us a general idea of pilgrims and the gospel that would be great!

I have had it twice... the first time I was treated and then fine the second time I was nursing my 1 year old and opted for amoxicillin instead of doxy - it did not work and so I weaned and did a full 4 weeks of doxy. I have been fine since then :) I am not too scared of lymes, we are in a heavy area and treatment always seems to work with the people I know (sometimes it takes two rounds though...).

This was my attitude to my mother until she became a danger to others, but that came in ways I didn't expect. Once she couldn't smell a gas leak, wouldn't fix the window that could have rained down glass on the postman, and was not maintaining the electrical appliances endangering her next door neighbour through fire risk, then I had to act. Even without the neighbour, the fire risk potentially endangered fire/police who might respond. She was mentally alert but physically frail and unable to keep the house safe.
I never thought of that, we are very rural so if our house burns down then know one would be affected - the neighbors are a distance from us in all areas.
There was a story recently though of an old man in his 80's who had dementia and was living with his sister (also in her 80's)... he lost it one day and stabbed her and her dog to death with her knitting needles. That man clearly needed someone to step in but I am guessing one even knew him and his sister were in that situation (they lived 10 miles out of town too).

Honestly if they are not considering it then I would not even try to convince/push them into it. I would drop it all together without feeling guilited into 'helping/caring' for them.
If I am 75 years old and haven't moved from my chair in over a year then who cares!? I earned the right to live alone (or with DH in his chair) and to die the way I please- even if it is in my own pee/poo ;-) I would be so depressed if someone thought they could come in, care for me (if I was unwilling), move me to a new home, ect... I lived my life and paid my taxes, know one should tell me what to do or anyone else for that matter.
** IF the person has dementia (or is a threat to themselves/others) then I think different - but they they are fit as a fiddle in the head and want to be home, even if that means peeing on the floor then fine by me :D

I live in northern Wisconsin and honestly LOVE it. Sure, February does get to be a long month when it is -10 below for weeks at a time.... but other than that I love the change of seasons. We have hot summers and cold winters - its fun :D Some years like this one it will be 40-50 degrees out in February! Plus, it makes winter vacations to Florida and Texas even better!

I really like normal underwear and pads, like cloth pads :) Total opposite of depends but if this is not your first then you know what to expect as far as bleeding/discomfort and what will work for you.

Please remember that even if she does not have symptoms in a few days the CDC website says she is still contagious for 14 days - I honestly would not let her near my little one for at least two weeks after her fever is gone!
-
I have been having crazy dreams too.... Last night my husband was "Ross" in Poldark season 2 and Elizabeth came looking for him because she just had his (my husbands) baby.... The baby had my husbands very distinct nose! I do have an excuse though, this pregnant has caused some crazy dreams lately.

Your body will usually show Lyme antibodies after an infection - is there a chance that is what the .12 is? Honestly, I think 2008 is too far back for this to currently be the issue.... unless you had another bite ;)
-
But it isn't banned from the planes to my knowledge is it?
Oh no, I dont think it is. I was just thinking about other people and their safety.

My solution would be to quit buying any of it ever. It isn't like kids *need* bagels and breakfast cereal.
No more need to police. And if you feel like this isn't fair to the kids how about letting them pick out a box of cereal on their birthday.
Eggs are cheaper and less likely to be inhaled.
This is me too!
Your children are old enough to make a sandwich, salad, slice an apple with peanut butter, make a fried egg or bowl of oatmeal. We eat a lot of air popped popcorn as a snack - its cheap and I can buy the organic in bulk (just like oats). The ones older than 16 can use their own money to buy junk food :)

Hmm why would this be a problem if you are following the guide lines? We bring this stuff all the time. Put in the ziploc bag that they tell you and have the small sizes that they require.
One bag per person taken out at security.
Also we have made lots of pbj sandwiches and brought them just in our bags. No trouble
Not sure if you read my post, we posted around the same time - but peanut butter can kill some people.
-
Please do not bring nuts (or peanut butter) - I read about a young girl who almost died because a man refused to not open his nuts. Just breathing it in put her into shock :( Its sad!

I find the first 0-4/5 months okay then get a bit bummed after that but usually it goes away by a year. Do you live in the north, with snow? Fall babies make it harder for women up here....

Can you use spelt flour - I would use that, soak it in a sponage (water) and then add salt and finish. I enjoy the 'nutty' taste of spelt but if you dont you could add honey to it.

It annoys me when people complain about their MIL.... I have never had one, she passed away when DH was younger. For almost 10 years I wonder things like - will my daughter get breast cancer too? Will she start her cycle at 12 instead of me at 16.5? Will she have huge boobs, unlike me who is flat as a board? My FIL raised his 3 boys alone and know ones knows the answers/will talk about it.
-
I agree, it is to verify your child's age - and there is no issue that I can think of with the birth certificate. I would not give out my childs ss number though :)

Personally, she is going to be in so much pain from laying on her back... I had to, no sides, nothing and by week 2 it was killing me :( I would pray for her!

I did not read all the comments but think it is kinda nice that they picked the dates and did not ask you - I would make sure you and your boys are 'out of town' those dates. Maybe a nice waterpark/hotel? Your DH sounds really relaxed so I dont think he will be too upset if you and the boys leave for those few days... then hopefully you will get another 3+ years of nothign :)
ETA: I just saw someone else suggested this :)
For those you used Abeka Phonics/Reading...
in K-8 Curriculum Board

Thank you!! I was thinking about doing just the one book the other day and then spending other days reading more, working with the special sounds cards ect... I was wondering how I would get dd to actually read in a book after doing 2-4 pages of busy work first ;-)
