I am trying to plan history for my 4th grader next year. He is a typical boy who would rather be doing and building instead of reading. I am thinking about getting him some project books to go along with the reading that I have planned for history. I have noticed there are several different series of project books for kids. Has anyone used any of these and can compare the type of projects in these books?

I have been thinking about getting A Journey Through...the Centuries of America Unit Study and Lapbook Has anyone used this before or have another suggestion for a unit study for similar time period that is about a 3 grade level.
I am also considering a few Progeny Press guides. Had anyone use The Secret Garden or Wrinkle in Time guide?
I am interesting in seeing what else everyone is considering.

Another book that is similar to Figuratively Speaking is the book Figurative Language and other Literary Devices. It doesn't cover as many topics as Figuratively Speaking, but I like the definitions better. I am planning on using both with my 7th grader next year. We are both have to see the big picture first and then the details. I like the combination of the two books.

I am curious as well. My daughter (12) wants me to buy this for her.

This thread is very dangerous for me. I love cockers. My husband says we are at our limit with 3 dogs, but cockers are just so cute.

You did a nice job on the grooming. I have two cockers and I need to figure out how to groom them. Are you on any cocker forums? I don't post on any, but I have found Zim cockers forum to have lots of good information about cockers.

My oldest struggles with math and wants to use Teaching Textbooks 7 next year for her 7th grade math. I think Teaching Textbooks would be a good fit for her. I would like to find something for her to solidify some math skills before she starts as well as possibly continue to use along with Teaching Textbooks. I was strongly considering Life of Fred, but now I am looking at Jump Math at Home. Is there a placement test for Jump Math at Home or a scope and sequence somewhere? I am not sure which level of Jump Math at Home to use before Teaching Textbook 7.

We bought these yesterday at Target, specifically because they claim to be made in the USA. I try to buy as little as possible from China.
Have you tried these yet? My daughter and I love the black Ticonderoga pencils because we love the black erasers. Does anyone else have a suggestion for a replacement.

Well we have 2 cocker spaniels and 1 cavalier/cocker mix. We love all of our dogs, but the cavalier king charles spaniel is the best family dog. All of the dogs are great, but we often describe our cavalier as happy. She is just happy all the time. It doesn't matter if she is snuggled with you on the couch or playing ball. She just wants to be near her family and to be loved. She does have longer hair, but not nearly as much hair as our cockers. I have had many cockers and I thought I would always have at least one cocker, but I am quickly becoming a huge cavalier fan.

My eye doctor told me that I have dry eyes as well. She recommended TheraTears Lubricant Eye Drops. I am out and need to get some more. Has anyone used this and can compare it to the other products mentioned in this thread?

Update
They will be bringing the dogs food. A bag of dog food bit probally won't eat and I should just not worry about it??
What am I gonna do with a dog who won't eat?
She should bring whatever food the dog is used to eating. I have had dogs in the past that won't eat at all the first day or two that we leave. I would tell whoever is watching them to not be surprised if they don't eat much the first few days. It was just what they did.

When I was a teenager I babysat for a family that had two Rhodesian Ridgebacks. They were big, but the ones that they had were so sweet. I remember watching an Animal Planet show about them and they are very athletic.

My husband and I are both picky, and our kids are even more picky. I would love to have healthy meals that the whole family would eat. That has proven to be a much bigger challenge than I thought it would be.

I agree. I think this book would work for you. Christianbook has examples of the inside of the book.

:grouphug: I would tell her. If she is anything like my daughter she already knows. I got pregnant when my oldest was about the same age as your daughter. We were not planning on telling her. She never said anything so we had no idea she knew anything. I went to a doctor appointment and came back to my mom's and my mom told me that my daughter knew. My mom didn't tell her. She had just figured it out on her own. It was much better once I knew that she knew. She was relieved to be able to talk about it. It was hard for her to keep that bottled inside and not be able to ask questions. It was still hard on everyone, but much easier than keeping it private and letting her deal with it on her own.

I have been thinking about doing that for my son next year.

The Dyslexic Advantage , by Brock & Fernette Eide, is a great book to read. It is not so much a nuts-and-bolts book on how to remediate the areas of difficulty in dyslexia- though the second half of the book does outline some aspects of this area. The book was written to provide a positive spin on dyslexia and to celebrate the gifts that are often present in dyslexia. One of the challenges is to figure out how to balance developing a child's strengths with remediating weaknesses. The best outcomes are when attention is given to both parts of the developmental process.
:iagree: I just started reading this book, and it is fantastic. It is just what I wanted to give me the bigger picture of dyslexia and not just focused on the reading and spelling side of dyslexia.

The one I'm getting has the grooming kit :D
Please post a review after you try out the grooming kit. If it works well that would be a big help.

I recently bought a proclick. I love it. I find that is is much easier to use than I thought it would be. The spines can be opened again pretty easily. The biggest con that I have found is that the spines specifically for the proclick only come in two colors (black and navy) and not very many sizes. I know I can buy spiral in more colors and sizes that will work with the holes punch with the proclick, but I haven't bought any yet.

This thread has brought back memories for me. At my elementary school's fall party I won a goldfish in a bag. That fish lived for 3-4 years. I loved having him.

We got a movie from Redbox last weekend. It was a blank looking DVD (like the ones you buy to back-up your computer) with the name of the movie written on it with a Sharpie. I thought it was odd but now I wonder if I should send an email to Redbox. It played fine.
What movie was it? My husband was telling me about a movie out right now that is about a hacker and the way you described the DVD is what he told me it is supposed to look like. It is designed for that movie. The company even has a post about it on their page. I can't remember the actual name of the movie.

If you are using a Canon camera why is there a reason you have ruled out Canon lenses? Is a Nikon lens going to fit on your Canon camera? I am a Canon user and I have been happy with Canon.

Books for hands on history proects?
in K-8 Curriculum Board
Posted
Thank you both. I had forgotten about the Hands and Hearts History kits. I had never heard of Enrichment4You or some of the other resources mentioned. These are the type of things that I know my son wants. He likes paper crafts okay, but he really wants to make real things. When we were at the craft store yesterday he found a latch hook kit. Today he did the entire latch hook soccer ball. He has plans to make it into a pillow for his room. I need to find more projects like this for him to do. I love the sew your own moccasins idea, but I am not very crafty and would do much better with some sort of kit.
