I wouldn't go to any extreme either way. Most of us lefties manage well with what's availible without any special tools. On the other hand I find the not wanting to coddle lefties a bit silly too. Sometimes a left hander just needs a proper pair of left-handed scissors and all the hard-nosed opinions about learning to live in in a right-handed world a mother can muster aren't going to change that fact.
I'd say don't sweat it. When you see your child struggling with something that a left-handed tool might help then pursue the special tools.
