  1. I think I got rid of all of the e-mails. I haven't received any since earlier this afternoon.

Here's what I did. I uninstalled and then reinstalled it. I then clicked on Subscriptions and clicked (and held down) on Well Trained Mind App with my finger. It asked me if I wanted to unsubscribe and I did.

I also Clicked on Forums and did the same thing. It asked me if I wanted to Delete the app. That seems to have taken care of it.

    Thanks for helping.

  2. If you decide to go with a prescription, know that Nystatin is nearly worthless.  Over half of cases are resistant to it, just like bacteria is becoming resistant to antibiotics, AND even if it works, the yeast has been found to begin regrowth within 45min, so current recommendations are to coat the mouth every 90min all day.  If you go longer than 3hrs overnight, you'll undo your hard work.  So, another vote for Gentian Violet if it's just your mouth.

If you're feeling it anywhere else, a Diflucan prescription might be better.  It's absorbed systematically, so you don't have to take it nearly as often as the Nystatin, and it will help flush the yeast out of the rest of your digestive tract and anywhere else.  Just make sure you get the systemic dose that you take for a week or two, instead of the single pill that is prescribed for GYN issues.

You can also eat a couple cloves of raw garlic a day as another systemic option, if Diflucan isn't an option for you.

" it will help flush the yeast out of the rest of your digestive tract and anywhere else"

To clarify, it works by stopping the growth of the new yeast.

Years ago I had a severe yeast issue and the Diflucan allowed me some time to start rebuilding my gut with high doses of probiotics (vitacost is who I've used). I was very glad that I had very helpful mid-wives/OB who were willing to help me with an extended dose of Diflucan (it use to only be dosed at 1-2 pills). I think I took it for several weeks.

I did try Gentian Violet but since mine was more internal than external, it only helped so much.

    Fast healing!

  3. My background as a tutor is remediating, writing, math and reading for K-9 for children with Dyslexia, ADHD and language processing.

That being said, I have a friend/acquaintance who is begging me to work with her 12th grade son (diagnosed with Dyslexia) and help him with the SAT writing. The first time he took the test he did not ask for the extra time he was allowed and ran out of time and didn't finish the essay. (He is also taking the ACT at some point).

So, since she's worn me down, :), I was thinking I could do some timed writings and see if I can make any suggestions on his writing.

Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas of things I can or should use or do in order to help him.

  4. Great for getting the evals started. When you realized there was a problem you got appointments/evals started. That's what a good mom does.

When I realized my dd couldn't see I took her to the doc. Atter she got her glasses/contacts, the first thing she said was "now I can see the vault and the people coming into the gym". As a competitive gymnast this was rather important :) I still wonder how long she struggled to see. I did the best I could at the time.

  5. I am having this exact same problem! It all started after tapatalk was installed...I have uninstalled from all of my devices...gone on here and stopped all notifications but still getting thousands of emails on every topic!!! Please help!!!

I'm still getting the e-mails, too. I hope there's a way to get rid of them.

  6. For financial aid, I believe half-time or more status is required.

That's good to know. I didn't have financial aid for undergrad due to parents planning ahead so this is new to me.

I think I'm going to say I want to go full-time and if I have to change it later I can and will. At least I hope.

    Thanks again.

  7. I have a friend who just got a masters in Ed in reading, and she joined a program for full time working students which focused on one course every five weeks for 18 months.  She worked full time and was a mostly single parent of several kids (a bit older than yours), but she made it.  It was HARD.  Her program was online, as well.  I would look into something like this that is specifically designed for full time teachers.

Sorry I have no idea about the grant/loan question.

That sounds similar to what I'm trying to do. The course last about 5-6 weeks and I should be finished the whole thing in about 2 years. That would be hard as a single mom. Although it sometimes feel like I'm a single mom I know that dh is there to help get things done. It sounds like full-time might be an option. That's good to know.

    Thanks

  8. I don't know if I should post this here or somewhere else but I have a question.

    1) I am applying to an online Master's in Ed (Reading) program and I have no idea what my enrollment status should be (full-time, part-time, 1/2, or less). Currently I work teaching during the day and tutor in the evening. Since my husband is mostly back to work (at night), I plan on cutting back some on tutoring but I still need to do some). I also have 3 kids 15, 13 and 9 who are involved in a variety of activities and go to school during the school year. I have been the primary source of income for 7 years so this isn't new to them.

The financial aid office is asking for my expected status and I have no idea as to what is reasonable. I'm thinking that 1/2 to 3/4 might be nice but is that too much? When I was single years ago I managed 15-18 credits while working full-time but that was a long time ago.

Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated.

    2) they are also asking whether or not i want to be considered for loans. If I say yes, will that mean I'm less likely to get a grant becuase I think I have the ability to pay it off. If I say no, will it eliminate me from anything. The reality is that I will probably have to do loans but given our household income, paying them off won't be easy.

    Thanks a lot.

  9. I just set up a chore chart for my kids this week. So far it is working but we'll see.

DD14 and DD13: sweep, mop, pick=up, laundry, dishes, clean room, mow lawn

DS9: sweep, room, laundry, and helping dad as much as he can.

Getting all of this done is allowing me to spend time doing more deep cleaning. At least that's the idea.

  10. I've had kids in school for 15 years (even while homeschooling) and I think the last lunch I packed was in 2004 or so. My kids pack their own lunches starting fairly young.

They are also responsible for packing snacks and whatnot for sporting practices/events.

My responsibility ends with buying the food ;)

  11. What you could try, is to check the box Email Notifications and save it.

Then go back and uncheck it and save it.

Which will update the setting and might correct the problem?

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried it a couple of times and so far it isn't working. I'll keep trying and maybe one time it will.

    Still tons of e-mails.

    Thanks!

  12. Not yet, I am trying to recreate the problem.

Thank you! I have been on these boards for years and this is the first time I have done this.

I still am nota sure if it is a Tap-A -talk probleym or something else.

Your help is greatly appreciated. The number of e-mails is incredible .

  13. I recently decided to try TapaTalk through my phone to view messages and after I did that I started receiving e-mail notifications of just about every new post on the Boards. I am trying to figure out how to make it stop :)

I removed tapatalk from my phone. I have also gone into My Settings and gone to Notification Preferences. I have nothing checked for "E-mail Notifications" meaning that I shouldn't be receiving any through e-mail.

I do like using the notifications within the Boards but I certainly don't need all those e-mails.

Any other suggestions of things to try.

    Thanks,

  14. My daughter routinely got so swollen she would develop cellulitis on the bites on her face or head.   The bites would get puffy, swollen, weepy.    She finally outgrew the extreme reaction as she got older.

My son got periorbital cellulitis earlier this year (origin unknown) and our first response was to try Benedryl because it looked like an allergic reaction. As soon as we took him to the doctor, she told us to send him immediately to the hospital. After several days of IV antibiotics he was as good as new.

I had never heard of this before my son was diagnosed with it.

  15. My mom taught me how to change a tire when I was 15.  When I was 18, a friend and I went on road trip to the other side of our state and we got a flat on the way home.  I knew how to change it, but the lugnuts were on so, so tight we were unable to get them off on our own.  We did have someone pull over and help us loosen the lugnuts.  We finished changing the tire once they left.  Then we had to find a garage (in an unfamiliar town) to put a full-size tire in place of the doughnut tire.  We survived and it was a really great story to tell for a long time, however, I believe that having an alternative (like AAA) would have been preferred in this situation.  So, yes, I'll teach them, but "knowing" how to change a tire may not be enough in all circumstances.

eta:  I chose when they start to drive.  I will teach my kids how to change a tire, but I don't put much weight on it as a life skill.  We have road-side assistant that I would prefer my kids to use.  Where a family lives may have some bearing on when/if one learns how to change a tire.  City vs rural or the state's legal driving age.

This reminded me of the time I was traveling with my mom and my kids on an 800 mile trip and we had to change the tire. We pulled into a shopping center area and I started changing the tire. We could not get those lug nuts off and a young (early 20s man and I assume his girlfriend) stopped to offer help. He wanted to help but didn't know how to change the tire. I said I could do the tire but needed muscle to loosen the lugnuts.

So, with his muscle and me explaining what to do we got the tire off. AT least now I hope he knows how to change a tire -- or at least realizes that it isn't hard to do.

  16. We've done it before and we were just talking about doing it again. It is well worth it. You should be fine with what you are considering adding to your dumpster but some do have restrictions so make sure you know what they are.

We do the work ourselves but if our circumstances were different I would definitely hire someone to assist in filling the dumpster.

  17. I hear ya! I've been researching the same thing. I don't have to do online (but it would be nice). Every dang school has different prerequisites for me since my bachelors is science and not arts. The school I graduated from won't take any of my credits and says I have to basically get a second bachelors (30-45 credits) before they will award me a teaching certificate but hey you can do both programs at once! (Like that's happening with 4 kids.)

Exactly! The time I'm spending doing this "research" is the time that I should be using to actually complete my degree -- if I ever figure out a place to apply.

It has been 20 years since I've been to college so I'm feeling like there's a whole new world out there in education.

The school ads that are all over my Facebook (and other websites) are getting out of control. It is like a reminder that I'm failing at this search.

  18. I think I'm whining :)

I am determined to get my Masters Degree in Education (Literacy/Reading) -- it must be online, low cost and not have too many weird requirements. Basically I want the reading degree and don't need nor want any kind of public school teacher requirements. I'm happy to stay in private schools.

You'd think it would be easy but there are too many options (most don't work for me) and wading through the websites has been exhausting. I think I found a total of about 3 places in the many websites I've looked for that I might be able to do. Even then they might be too much money. Ugh!

I just want the right one to appear on my screen -- NOW

  19. Great responses so far. Thanks!

Entry fees for the event itself?

For food, include actual meals as well as snacks and drinks all day long

Definitely and I will have to pay a spectator fee, too. And, if I take any other of my family they will have to pay spectator fees. I forgot about that.

Baggage fees - Although these trips are short and in our family we wouldn't need to check bags, your family may differ.

Equipment transportation - What type of sport is this? If there are large items to transport, that cost should be factored in.

Coach fees - If coaches are not volunteers, how will they be compensated for their time & expenses and how much of that will you have to bear?

Food - Cost will depend on accommodations.  Some hotels provide a light breakfast. Will you be able to eat in the room at all? Bagels in the room for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch for example? If there is a refrigerator, you can get milk & have cereal as well.

Misc expenses - Will there be new team uniforms to purchase? Travel size bottles for carry on baggage, although those are usually fairly inexpensive.

I haven't flown in years so I didn't even think about baggage fees. So probably yes.

No equipment fees, uniform fees or coaches fees (team pays those but will probably reduce some of the fundraising contribution for the Bahama trip). They are gymnastics meets and our team covers those costs.

    Yes to travel size bottles.

For the Bahamas, will there be a cost for a shuttle or something from the airport to the hotel? From the hotel to the competition venue?

That's a good question. I think the competition will be in the same place as the hotel but I'm not sure. I will need to look into that.

  20. Here's the background:

DD14's team wants to compete in 3 travel events this coming season. The third meet is one we've done before so I know what to expect for that one. The reality is I'm not sure i can do any of them but I'd like to see if it is realistically possible to do 1 of them. I won't know until after I commit how much fundraising will help in contributing to reducing the costs.

    Here are the options:

Bahamas in December from Maryland -- our team is trying to do fundraising for this one but I have no idea how much we'll end up with to reduce the costs.

    2-4 nights

    Hotel/resort: $170-220/night includes water park

Airfare: $600/person (there might be cheaper ones but the websites confuse me)

Passports: $85/person (I have an expired one somewhere under my former name)

    Food: ????

    I'm hoping I won't need a car. What else am I forgetting?

New York City in January from Maryland -- 2 to 3 nights (could be 1 night)

    Hotel: $250/night

Travel: $100 (team bus or car)

Food: ??? (cheap places -- maybe one nicer place for a meal)

taxis/parking depending on how I get there: ???

My other problem is that I have 2 other kids not on dd14's team and I'd hate for just the team kid to go and not the other two. We went to Disney property to compete 2 years in a row and didn't go to the parks because I couldn't afford to take all of the kids.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you!
