  1. I don't find any of the SOTW volumes to be religious. Yes, SOTW 1 includes Judeo-Christian sacred stories, but it also includes stories from other religions. The second volume also contains religious stories where they help illustrate the beliefs of a culture, but there are fewer of them. You can't gain a good understanding of history without understanding the Church and the Reformation or other religious topics, nor should those parts of history be excluded from a secular education. :)

I totally agree with this. I think studying these books has helped my kids see religion for what it is ;)

  2. I had a dermatologist recently refuse to make an appt without SS#. I said fine, you are not the only derm in town! We found another one, no problem. I just took DD to the the eye Dr. The form asked for her last 4 digits. I left it blank and had no problem. I do not, will not give this info out. They don't need it.

  3. In a very small town in S. WI my red-headed brother was born to my brunette mom and black haired dad. The ladies at church started wagging their tongues. So to shut them up my mom said, "Well of course he belongs to the milk man!" :001_huh: The milk man was red-headed! :tongue_smilie:

We laugh about it now, but I'm sure it was horrendous then.

People can be so stupid! I'm sorry you had that happen to you. :grouphug:

Our oldest has red hair. The other 2 kids have brown hair as do my husband and myself. We have heard everything! It really is not anyone's business. It makes me really mad. What if the kid starts to question why he/she looks different?? I'm sure it could mess with their head. I usually give the offender a genetics lesson :) I'm SO glad to have a redhead and we work super hard making sure he doesn't feel out of place. It doesn't help when a stranger questions his origin!

I'm sorry someone was rude to you!

  4. I feed the neighbor children if my kids ask for a snack. My children know to ask me first. They don't get snacks for themselves without asking either. Sometimes, I'll make a plate of snacks and bring them outside if the kids have been playing a while. I figure they are probably hungry. My kids will get drinks for their thirsty friends. I think that is very nice and thoughtful of them. The other moms will give my kids a snack if they are over playing, or my kids will come home and get one. Really, it hasn't been a big deal.

If money is a problem for you, then just say no. It's ok :)

  5. I have never understood when someone says to me, "You are so lucky. I wish I could stay home." When our first son was born, we were 23. We had no money. I stayed home. I simply couldn't take him to daycare. It was never an option. Most people can survive on one income if they really wanted to. It's all about what is important to you. It sounds like these parents are treating your niece as an accessory, some kind of status symbol like all of their stuff. Sad.

  6. Do any of you do anything special when your child completes 5th grade? I remember my school had a graduation ceremony. Kids around here have big 5th grade field trips. Our oldest is finishing up what would be his 5th grade year. I do feel like he deserves some recognition as he is technically done with elementary. What have you done in the past or are planning to do?

  7. My husband is a pilot, so we are VERY careful about 9-11. Our oldest was only 1 when it happened. I think last year around 9-11 our two oldest saw something on the news about it. We might have said something to the effect of "bad men flew airplanes into those buildings and a lot of people died, but that is NOT going to happen to daddy's plane." Of course, we don't know that, but these are our children and we will protect them from worrying about daddy dying.

No, We will not be telling them about Bin Laden. It has no effect on their lives and it wouldn't mean anything to them anyway. If they see it or read about it, we'll discuss it then, if they want.

  8. :iagree:Gravity is also a theory. lol As far as differentiating between micro and macro...well, if your religious preferences dictate that, then I guess that's what you'll do. I don't differentiate. Organisms evolve. Period. (That's how I teach it, I mean.)

Anyway, do you really care about the answer to this question, because it seems rather rhetorical and somewhat of an attack on people who accept evolution as a fact. It's kind of like me posting, "HOW do you teach religion as a FACT?" Rather inflammatory, wouldn't you say?

Pretty much what I was going to post. Teach your kids what you want and I'll do the same.
