  1. I figured that would be coming soon! I love hearing "baby" news...it's so exciting and miraculous and mysterious and just so.....hmmm....I don't know! Amazing! Good for them!....

I have followed the show for quite a while now. I admire Michelle so much. Aside from the logistics of a large family seeming so effortless (!!), she is such a loving, kind, caring person. I feel like she (and their family), regardless of our differences in theology, represent Christianity as the Lord would hope from all of us. She is a great role model.

    Yeah Josh and Anna!

  2. Hi all! I've decided to take the plunge and get music lessons for the kids. We have a piano, but all 3 olders want to learn guitar!! Go figure! DH is ALMOST against the idea since we'll have to buy/rent/pay extra for guitars, as well as pay for lessons. Any ideas on where to get cheap kids sized guitars? I think I can sway him if the costs aren't too high....

I remember homeschool buy's co-op had them in several sizes around Christmas time for a reasonable price (maybe around $100?), but I'm not finding them on the site now. Boo hoo!

Thanks in advance for the ideas!

  3. Thanks for the offer! So nice of you....

I wish I could take you up on it.... I ended up going through Newport News. I was able to get a considerably cheaper flight, AND a direct flight from Boston. Richmond had connections and cost more. Weird, huh? Especially since Richmond is larger (I think). Anyway, I'll either get a cab or (gulp) rent a car....

    Anyone else going through NN?

  4. Someone here once posted this:

    http://www.emints.org/ethemes/resources/S00000102.shtml

I haven't used it, but thought it looked decent.

I have also used the Lego Simple machines learning kits like these:

    http://www.legoeducation.com/store/detail.aspx?CategoryID=160&by=9&ID=343&c=1&t=0&l=0

(My DS loves the building it part, but the science learning part is sparse and dry. That's OK though, b/c the fact that Legos are involved outweighs it!)

Here's something else I found that has free curric., though I guess you'd have to have the Lego parts:

    http://www.lessonplanet.com/search?keywords=lego+simple+machines&rating=3

I think Lego has some free online curric. ideas of their own too:

So there's a few to check out and investigate! Have a good day...

  5. Your DS's is a little more organized, but still...we have the boxes, bins and drawers, the shelfy things, and the long desk workspace. My DS won't let me help clean them up very often. He wants them all OUT! He has a similar sized work space and plays w/ it daily. He says he needs it all out so he can SEE what he needs! I make him clean about 1/2 of his collection every few weeks when we have my folks overnight, since we use his room as the guest room. But MAN, it looks like Legos everywhere in his room, and that's the way he loves it!

Cool city though - I like that a lot! I'm sure my DS will too - I'll show him now....

  6. I have never been to a HS'ing conference (a convention yes, conference non), so I don't really know what to expect! I am excited though! I'm so glad we worked it out so I could go! I think I'll be bringing plenty of notetaking paper, but otherwise, I don't know. If I have room, I'll bring my WTM copy too (great idea), and my school schedule drafts for marking up. Maybe SWB would sign our WTM's too! hee hee!

BTW, you're flying right? Were you able to get a flight out of Newport News on Sat. night? I couldn't find one single flight (at least to Boston, where I need to go), so I have to leave Sun. morning. I reserved a hole in the wall place near the airport for that Sat. night to save money. My Sun. flight is at 7am, so it's not like I will be needing a bunch of ammenities for that night - just a bed! I'm not reserving a car either - doing the cab thing, so that should be interesting. I wish we all knew each other's schedules so that we could hook up rides together! Anyway....

  7. About ear infections.... My DD-now7 used to get ear infections w/out fever (at first) all the time. I would know for a couple of reasons. She would take longer naps, but the real key for that she'd CRY and pull off every time she'd nurse. If baby isn't still nursing or drinking from a bottle, how about a sippy cup? They have to create pressure in their mouths to pull the sip, which affects their ear. If the ear is sensitive due to infection, she may be upset, cry, or refuse to drink from it. Has she been drinking from a sippy cup at all?

Have you checked her head to toe? (for things like "owies", strings (great post!), or ticks?). When was the last time she pooped? My DS-now2 had a serious constipation issue when he was under 16mo. Sometimes he'd get super fussy, and I'd forget at first, but then remember, "oh yeah, he hasn't pooped in 3 days! of course he's cranky!" (and out would come the glycerin suppositories! mommy to the rescue! poor kid....learning to walk cured most of this issue - weird, huh?).

FWIW, I will never ignore a cry. It's bad actually, b/c training kiddo to sleep through the night is painful to me. But I had the bad experience of having my oldest (when he was about 2yo) cry a bunch of time once (when we were trying to sleep training him). When I finally broke down and went in to deal with him, he had a swollen mouth. He'd had an allergic reaction to something and his mouth was swelled half shut! and I was unknowingly ignoring him! Poor kid! OMGoodness, it has made me a neurotic mommy - I can't ignore fussiness now!

Anyway, I wish you well. I'd give her one dose of ibuprofin to see if changes her mood at all. If it does, you at least know that SOMETHING is hurting/swelling. From there, if you can't figure it out, I'd take her to the Dr.'s office.

Good luck to you and baby girl!

  8. I thought you were going to say that she fell IN! That would have been either funny or terribly dangerous! I guess you'll have to be careful around the potty now, since I suppose she COULD fall in. Ugh, toddlerhood can be fun and scarey all in one!

Congrats on being out of the loop! (I have a newly turned 2yo who's going to get SHOVED into the potty training loop this summer! hee hee!)

    :-)

  9. I realize this is very anecdotal, BUT I will share anyway. We USED to use JCP b/c their prices were so decent compared to reasonable quality. But last year, they lost or accidentally destroyed my family pictures TWICE. Not once, but TWICE! I had to re-iron all of the clothes (which weren't new any more), I had to take a whole other Sunday afternoon (time my family usually cherishes) to do a re-take. The only thing they offered me was a free 8x10. Didn't even say SORRY. I was so furious!! FWIW, the 2nd round of pictures didn't come out as good either.

The other time was was my baby's 12mo. pictures. By the time we knew what was going on, he was already 14 or 15 mon.'s and bigger, and... it just wasn't the same. Again, they didn't offer much as an appology. And again, I was totally crazed. Needless to say, we don't go there anymore....wouldn't consider it ever for free....

    Thanks for letting me share....

  10. Have you checked with any of your local homeschool groups? I think many will organize a group time with a photographer/company for doing shots at discounted rates (since it's a group). Even if you don't normally use the homeschool group for other activities, surely they wouldn't mind you jumping in on pics since it can usually lower everyone's rates, the more they can get involved.

    Good luck!

  11. But then, I also record Fringe right after, and I was lucky enough that my Fringe recording had the end of AI on it's beginning! Adam did very well, of course. He has a great voice, plus is so theatrical and has so much presence that he always steals the show. Simon gave him some standing applause! Very unusal for Simon, of course....

I'm sure you'll get to see it online somewhere, but you might have to wait 24hrs or something.

  12. OK, it's becoming a little more clear (clearer?? see, I'm a grammar pathetic!)...

I love your explanations and samples Kay - I get all but the first two still.

The simple tense... I walked to the store.

The perfect tense is used for completed action... I have walked to the store (many times; alone; etc.)

Sorry to nit-pick....I'm trying to get this and feeling really dumb! So, I walked to the store....sounds like a completed action to me. Right? Yet, "I have walked to the store", sounds more completed, more final. Is that how I should describe it to DS?

OK, I need to move forward with my own grammar lessons before moving on with his - hee hee! I need to get a decent book out and broaden my understanding.

Thanks so much for helping ladies!

  13. He had his annual physical recently and I let him go in himself. We love our Dr. - see her often and trust her much. I had all the youngers with me and I didn't want DS to feel intruded upon while naked! ha! In other circumstances though, like an emergency room visit, or other needed tests (any and all - bloodwork, xrays, etc.), I still feel the need to be present to make sure he is being treated appropriately.

What's going on at your house?

  14. Hornblower - yes, that's my question.

So how do you decide to use the Simple Past tense (I walked) versus the Past Perfect (I had walked) (and even versus the Past Progressive? I know intuitively, but in trying to show DS, I realize that I don't know explicitly how to describe WHEN to choose which. FWIW, I feel like I use the correct forms (albeit intuitively), but DS OFTEN misuses grammar forms verbally, so we need to work this out...

Thanks! I'll follow the wiki link and see if I can make sense of it. My head is spinning! This is why we are supposed to learn this stuff properly the FIRST time around....argh! ;-p

    Thanks again - Stacey

  15. Help me out here...please. I was a pretty average student in grammar, and don't recall this at all. I'm going through the oral usage w/ DS10 at the end of FLL3. My question is on the sections that discuss the past tense verbs with helping verbs. What are the rules that govern when to use the past tense verb by itself, and when to use the past tense with helping verb form? At first I thought it had to do with how MANY of the DO's were being expressed. (i.e. I ran a race. I have run many races.) But then there are a few examples that don't fit this model. For instance, we could also say "My brother has run a race." (This is the example at the end of the page in the teache's manual on p. 440) See? Just one race, but we are using past tense with helping verb.

So what rule(s) govern when to use a helping verb with a past tense verb?

    Thanks so much!

  16. I had never heard the word before last year (I grew up on the east coast, spent much time in Ca, then back to the east coast). The kids learned a kiddie song at church from their mid-west-born youth leader and it goes "Pharoah, pharoah....whoa, baby, let my people go...UFFDAH....yah, sure, ya betcha!" (sung to the tune of Louis, Louis). I remember thinking - She MUST be making up this word!! Interesting to know that other people in the world are actually actively using this - in their own Latin version, no less!

    Thanks for sharing....

  17. We love to listen to books on tape in the car. We've been through all of the Little House series, all of the Chronicles of Narnia, all of the Anne of Green Gables (that our library had on tape), hmmm, what else? We love the series books b/c when we're done with one, it's nice to stay mentally in that frame of mind for the next one! An independent book would be good too.

Any other series that is of this caliber that is for kids that you suggest?

Thanks! You guys always have great suggestions!

  18. My 10yo 4th grader is just finishing FLL3. I really enjoyed it, and was pleased with the focus on sentence diagramming. It helped DS understand the parts of speech better. I could not have done it w/out the Teacher Manual and Student Workbook (I don't think the student book was meant to fly solo....). The scripting can get a little tedious, but I found that as I stuck with it, the well-worded explicit explanations and repetition (which I would tend to NOT do if left to my own) was what helped DS learn so much.

My only complaint about FLL3 is that it is very teacher intensive. DS could not just pick up the book and do a lesson. It had to be me, sitting with him, leading him, explaining to him, reading the scripting to him. I have 4 kids and I try to find places where I can have the kids work independently, and this WASN'T one of those places..... If this program came out w/ a CD or DVD, I would be right in line to buy it!! :-)

    Good luck!
