  1. If your children were homeschooled, they could enter the world capable of making the educational system better. If they went to PS, the reality is that they're not going to make it better. If they were homeschooled, they could make a difference in the future. I know nothing about Aristotle's philosophy however. I've only recently got into reading philosophy. :)
  2. What online classes have you taken/considered taking for self-ed? I don't really mean MOOCs but if there's an especially interesting one, please do share! :bigear:
  3. Hello all, I have a weak background in Geometry and Physics (in my eyes, anyway) and am looking for some resources to strengthen them. I've looked at AOPS but I really like explicit explanations rather than having to make connections myself. I'm not a huge fan of textbooks in general as I struggle to pick out what's important and what isn't and spend forever on one chapter. I did like Lial's Beginning and Intermediate Algebra, however. Would I like their Geometry? I'm not sure if there are multiple differently titled ones like there is for Algebra but if there are, which title/edition is best? I hated Jacob's Geometry but I know a lot of boardies love it. It's just not for me. Are there any video lecture courses that I could do, particularly MOOCs? They tend to fit well with how I like to learn. I don't have a lot to spend money-wise but I do have a fair bit of time. The same thing goes for Physics. Videos preferred, dislike textbooks, would like problems to work through. This isn't for any particular reason other than self-ed so I don't necessarily need something that covers the traditional areas. I'd really appreciate some help from those more knowledgeable than I! :) Dina
  4. I don't know what speed reading software actually does but I use Spreeder quite often. You can copy and paste some text into it, set it for a specific number of words per minute and it only shows 1-3 words at a time at the pace you're trying to read. It really forces you to concentrate 100% but I'm not sure whether she would lose a lot of comprehension if she genuinely can't read at a faster pace.
  5. I just wanted to thank you for this post, Laura. I ordered Wolf Hall and accidentally spent most of today reading it. It's been so long since I've read historical fiction. I hope the OP doesn't mind me asking but do you have any more similar suggestions?
  6. There's a study guide for Wheelock's that was written specifically for people who don't have a solid grammar education. I don't know if that would be helpful to you but you can find it here.
