  1. Sorry, this is not at all obvious to me. If people who make more money have to pay more into the system for the same amount of coverage that those who make less money get, what makes it different than the way things work today? Now people who pay for insurance pay high rates because costs are high to cover those who don't pay their bills. Why can't someone who earns money keep it?

That's the way taxes work now. Someone that earns 100k is going to pay more taxes than someone that makes 25k. They both receive the same services for their taxes.

  2. Let's be clear here private health insurance companies DO NOT have your best interests at heart. They are in business to make a profit, to make money for their share holders, and to reduce the bottom line as much as they can.

They deny benefits, refuse to pay for services, and will not insure adults with pre-existing conditions.

Health care costs are out of control. Millions of Americans have no insurance. People that fall below the poverty line already receive medicaid or some kind of state run health insurance. Meanwhile the working and middle class don't qualify for help with medical insurance costs and many can't afford to purchase it for themselves.

As a society we should be looking out for everyone. We should pool our resources and provide health care for all the citizens.

  3. I have a problem with people being forced into paying for insurance through private for-profit insurance companies.

I would much rather see universal health care that everyone pays into through taxes so that everyone is covered. Obviously the more you earn the more you would pay into the system.

We already pay $700 a month for insurance premiums, which is just our portion. We still have to pay for ALL doctors visits, labs, etc... in full until we meet a 4k deductible and THEN the insurance will kick in.

I'd be happier paying that money in extra taxes towards universal health care.

For those that say that they think they wouldn't get as good medical care if the government were in charge, I have to tell you that there have been many times our health insurance has denied services, refused to pay, and given us such a hard time about things that they should be covering while charging us for the privilege.

  4. I was told in an email from them that I had to purchase BOTH the book and the online access from the web site.

You cannot buy the book somewhere else, like Amazon. Which really sucks since Amazon is so much cheaper.

This is my email to them:

From what I gather from The Well Trained Mind board I have to purchase the books through your website in order to be able to pay for the online teacher access.

    1. Is this correct?

    2. Can you link me to this information on your website so that I can share it with other homeschoolers that are interested in your program?

I have multiple children and would like to use this program with each of them. I currently have one child that is old enough for the program.

    3. If I purchase the books and the 1 year online access for my rising 10th grader can I repurchase online access in 3 years once my next child reaches 10th grade but without having to purchase the books again?

    4. If that is possible, how does that work? Would I be assigned a customer number to show that I have previously purchased the books?

    This was their response:

    1. Yes, this is correct. Our online Teacher editions and Student editions are subscription based and require a paid order for access.

    2. our website, with all of our product information, is http://saxonhomeschool.hmhco.com.

    3. Depending upon the product, you may purchase additional 1 yr online subscriptions without purchasing another textbook.

    4. When you order an online product, you supply us with your email address. We will then email to you a username/password, or registration instructions (depending upon the product).

NOTE: You do not receive a customer number. Each new subscription will equal a whole new order.

We hope this info helped. Should you require further assistance, please call us at 800-289-4490.

We believe this response has addressed your inquiry; therefore your ticket has been closed. If you have any additional questions or concerns please respond to this email, which will reopen your ticket. A Customer Service Agent will respond within 24 hours, or next business day.

  5. I don't think I have ever ordered a kids meal for one of my older kids. I mean the kid menu usually states an age range, usually 12 and under.

My 14 year old is not a big eater so instead we will order a side salad each and split an entree.

Perhaps a better solution would be to ask if you could get a half portion of an adult meal at a reduce cost or split a meal with your child.

  6. We used to lend them out at the park since we have extra guns. We pretty soon learned that other kids don't care if they lose the bullets. So no more lending them out.

My kids are pretty careful with the bullets because they know how expensive they are. If they need more bullets they have to buy them with their own money.

  7. Yep, that's what happens.

They don't work well here at our house since we get lots of power surges. The CFL bulbs are expensive and we went through 30 or 40 of them. They never lasted very long at all. We will NOT be buying any more. What a rip off.

I'll be sure to stock up on regular light bulbs.

FYI - Home Depot will recycle the CFL bulbs for you.

  8. I just went and looked at their website. It is kind of pricey - 350 pounds = $500 for 12 months of access.

Plus, I was not impressed since I was trying to watch their demo and couldn't pause it, so that it could queue up. So I watched about 2 minutes of stopping and starting video which was really annoying. It makes me wonder how companies are going to sell anything is their website doesn't work properly.

This is my favorite site: http://www.spanishdict.com/

    Plus it is free!

  9. Lentils, eggplant dishes, squash casserole, soy sausage, chickenless nuggets, quiche, spanikopita, vegetable egg rolls, pasta dishes, bean burritos, sweet potato casserole, roasted veggies, grilled veggie pockets, hummus, veggie burgers, soy breakfast patties, quinoa, millet, rice dishes, soups, bean dishes, crispy tofu, polenta, veggie stir fry, etc.... are all favorites here.

Check out http://www.allrecipes.com they have lots of great ideas. Or check out some vegetarian books out the library.

  10. I've had that happen. Two guys stopped by to ask if we were selling our pick up. It wasn't parked up near the road and it doesn't have a for sale sign.

Sometimes I think this is an excuse and they are scoping the place out to see if anyone is home.

I also had the neighbor stop by to ask if we wanted to sell our boat. I was okay with him stopping by since he is a neighbor. I told him the boat didn't run. He said he'd still be willing to buy it and fix it up. It was his lucky day because we gave it to him for free. We were just glad not to have it sitting there any more. :D

  11. Send him a letter stating you are not responsible for the those things and that it is his responsibility as general wear and tear and that you left the rental in a clean, acceptable condition.

Let him take you to small claims court if necessary. He would have to prove his case - pictures of a house that was damaged or needed painting and carpet cleaning that went beyond normal wear and tear. If he has no pictures it will be his word against yours. The burden of proof is on him.

Do not get bullied into paying for things that you are not responsible for.
