How could they tell him and not the younger ones? What a burden. Maybe the grandmother asked them to wait, or they were waiting on a social worker to assist. I don't envy the LEO's job at all, and this must be such a difficult aspect for them. They're not trained counselors. The department's publicizing it seems a bit icky though.
Totally agree!
I just imagine a 13 year old feeling betrayed in the end... or being suspicious in the hours waiting at the police station.

We put all our kids stuffed animals into a bean-bag bag (without beans in it, obviously). Easy to get to, but contained and neat and even functional when not needed.
This is such a practical idea! One twin is a stuffed animal collector and she also has a bean bag. I think I'll empty the "beans" and fill the bag with as many stuffies as I can.
I started asking in what scenario, exactly, he could anticipate a need for the old, wooden toilet seat with the damaged finish (for example).

work 15 minutes a day on one space at a time, give away, throw away, and keep
I love this method! Learned it from FlyLady, and I'll sometimes set a timer to keep me on task.

IMO, the 13 year old deserved to know immediately.
I understand not telling the younger kids right away, though.
ETA: Just read another article. Didn't any of the kids (especially the 13 year old) wonder where the parents were for so many hours?

On my son's 16th birthday, I woke him up and told him to get his shoes on to go get his driver's license. That was HUGE for him. He had been in the virtual dog house for months due to a driving "incident" and hadn't even been allowed behind the wheel for those months . . . I hadn't planned to let him get his license on his birthday because of said incident . . . but, it so happened that my mom was actively dying that week (in our shared home, hospice), so everything of course was sad and traumatic then. Mom had been an overly permissive and very forgiving parent . . . So, I decided in her honor to make Grandma's last gift to him getting his DL and forgetting the incident . . . despite the incident and my previously imposed consequences.
For my son, who has been vehicularly obsessed since infancy, there was no better gift.
That's so sweet! I have tears in my eyes...

I also agree that no way would my kid work there. It would be far too dangerous. All it takes is one junkie with a gun and everything changes in a very, very bad way. I know that isn't the issue at hand, but just, nope.
I did work in a place that sold coke. It was back in the late 1980s-early 1990s. The difference was I didn't know about the side business. Looking back I was incredibly naive and should have known...but I didn't. Well, I knew a lot of people there used, but I didn't and that was about the end of it.
It was a bar/restaurant and sometimes I would get handed a very large bill (like 100$) for a 2$ beer. I was told when that happened I was to call over the head bartender and he would handle the sale. I never noticed the beer would go over the counter with a small package on the side. And I also worked in the kitchen and was told that the big bowl of powder on top of the dishwasher was dish soap..but I found out later it was actually cocaine. I didn't tell the guy that I had washed the dishes with it, when I was left to run the kitchen my myself because he was to 'sick' to come to work.
In the end it got very messy and scary. The DEA was staking out the bar, the owner killed himself rather than be taken in, and I saw a lot of friends lives go to hell. Some of them ended up in rehab, but they had all dropped out of college never to go back etc etc.
It was very, very lucky that guns were never involved. It would have been so bad if things go ugly like that.
If I had known, I would have been asked to to testify, been monitored by the DEA etc. I am so glad I avoided all of that. I am sure the DEA had asked at one point, but everyone they would have asked would have been able to say that I knew nothing. a year later one of my former co-workers said that I was hired right when things started to get ugly and there seemed to be a general agreement that I was just too nice and sweet to get involved so it was best to just keep me excluded. Fine with me! The truth is that by then, they prob didn't trust me or something, again, fine with me!

Good thing you didn't get accused of stealing it!

The correct answer is B, though I sometimes use A when writing informally or when I'm jotting something down in a hurry.

I like the "2" version because it brings back fond memories of penmanship practice in Catholic school in the 80's. :)

I think it is important to remember what forgiveness is not. It is not condoning. It is not reconciliation. It is not forgetting. It is a process through which you let go of anger and resentment.
:iagree:
Forgiveness doesn't mean that what the person did is ok, nor does it mean that you accept their hurtful behavior.
Forgiveness means you're letting go of the hurt they caused you.

We got ours when oldest was 2, and donated it when twins were 7.
I wish we had kept it longer because they still enjoyed playing with it. I was on one of my decluttering sprees and made a mistake. :o
They still use the dollhouses at 11 (oldest played occasionally this past summer!) and I'm itching to donate those but don't want to do it too soon again...

Do you think it works?
No. :confused1:

In my area, the going rate for both is $20-$25 per hour.

So he gets math and doesn't need a lot of review.
It sounds like Saxon is not a fit for him.

My loads are:
Sheets
Blankets
Towels
Couch slipcovers
Bath mats
Undies/socks
Black/navy
grays/blues/greens
red/orange
lights or prints on a white background
whites
delicates, dark and light
:D
I actually don't mind laundry as a chore.

I don't like Saxon
3 is very teacher intensive as you know. Perhaps jump to 5/4 if you have it, but 7 is young...
If he's going to school in elementary, I wouldn't be concerned with him switching into Saxon from another program at home. If he were to go in the middle grades then I'd probably keep him in Saxon if I knew that's what they use.
Sounds like you're only using Saxon because that's what the school uses. At home, use what you actually enjoy and like to teach.

I have vegan wheat gluten beef, vegan beef bullion, vegetable broth, and baby bella mushrooms. It seems like a good start to a savory, beefy pie. :)
I've never had a real beef pot pie, but I've had tasty Linda McCartney meat pies, which only seem to be sold in England.
I've tried to make this once and it was bland and gross. I'd like a richer gravy, heavy flavors and herbs.
Any thoughts? Any ingredients or techniques I ought to know about?
My chicken pot pie is delicious, my crust is good.
Beef pie filling is a mystery...
I use lots of caramelized onions, tomato paste, and Worcestershire.

I don't have any experience with MM, but used the old spiral bound Saxon 3 with all 4 dc. I did it with my oldest the way you're describing it, because she was in 3rd or 4th grade - I can't remember - and I just wanted to zip through it.
The twins did it in 2nd grade with their 3rd grade brother. It was super boring and repetitious at first, and they also told me every day that it was too easy, but eventually they started to learn new things.
Lesson 40 isn't very meaty yet, but at the rate of 2-4 lessons per day you'll be getting to the good stuff quickly. :) Though the beauty of Saxon is the spiral repetition and you're not really getting that, nor does it sound like your son needs it. But he might at say, lesson 70 or 80...
If you like Saxon and like teaching it, stick with it!
But if you don't think you'll eventually slow down and do it "right" then switch. There's no point in trying to extract the basics out of an 800 page teacher's manual when another program will have it laid out for you.
-
Which lesson are you on?
Do you go through the entire sequence? Calendar, counting, clock, coin cup, pattern, word problem, facts practice, facts sheet, etc.? And then do the lesson plus lesson practice?
I ask because you say you do 2-4 lessons per day in 30 minutes. One whole lesson should take at least 30 min.
ETA: I just realized you're probably using the new 3, if so, disregard my questions... The old 3 gets very meaty even though it's slow in the beginning.

I chose Atlanta simply for the very nice hotel.
The older I get, the more I like to sleep in my own bed. If I'm going to sleep away from home, the amenities must be nice! :)

We talk about our children and how they drive us crazy (in a light-hearted way of course). Seems everybody can agree on that. :)

Oh!
I didn't catch that in either of the articles I read.
It all makes a lot more sense now. :o
