  1. I should note that calc will be purely hs ( same with precalc).. No more keystone tests!
  2. She has used TT for algebra 1 ,2, and geometry and just got the pre calc. She has also used keystone online school for geometry (her online school wanted and official credit for geo and keystone was cheaper than Ls) and she is currently filling out the tests for keystone algebra 2... She still used TT to learn the stuff, but her school wanted an official course to put on her transcript.
  3. Hello! So DD is trying to figure out her desired Calculus curriculum for the fall. After 4 years of homeschooling, she is desperate to not have a stressful math year (not stressful bc of the learning, but because we were so new to figuring out curriculum). Currently, she is thinking of using the following mixed together: Thinkwell Calculus Saxon Calc. and Maybe (she is getting the advanced algebra & Trig soon, so she will see if she likes it) Life of Fred Calculus. Originally, she was just going to use Thinkwell, but we saw a lot of people saying that Thinkwell is best used as a supplement. She really liked Teaching Textbooks lectures, so she says she NEEDS to have some sort of lecture for Calc., which is why we are definitely going to use Thinkwell either way. Anyway, she kind of likes the idea of using a textbook as well, which is why she was thinking Saxon. However, her online school uses this textbook - http://www.amazon.com/Calculus-Its-Applications-13th-Edition/dp/032184890X - so that could also be an option. Anyway, do *you* have any specific recommendations as to what has worked for your kids for calculus? Any curriculum recommendations are welcome over here, and in case you didn't notice we are totally open to using multiple curriculums! One note, is that we have - for the most part- chosen not to consider Chalkdust for two reasons- DD isn't sure that the lectures would hold her attention (she is afraid the layout might bore her) and it is a little pricey, so we don't want to risk her not liking them and having already bought them.
  4. I don't know of homeschool curriculums that have marine biology (other than apologia), but Laurel Springs (online school) currently has oceanography and honors oceanography, and this fall they will also have a marine science option... Not marine bio exactly, but she may like it. :)
  5. My daughter really liked the 'biojournal' section of the biology course, which was a warm-up assignment for each text based lesson (not sure if it is on the online lessons). She didn't like the labs very much, but in all honesty I think it is hard to enjoy them when you aren't in a school setting or don't have a parent who can help create a setting in which the lab is fun.. lol
  6. I am assuming you mean the LS courses, and in that case, you can see what textbooks and books they use for each course. You just have to go to their website course descriptions. DD is currently taking a science course that is online, and it is the keystone layout... I also know that their AP bio is k12, so they use a lot of other online school courses, apparently!
  7. With the exception of math, my daughter is a full time student at LS. Honestly, if you are good with homeschooling I would not recommend it. We chose it because we were new to homeschooling and liked the idea of an accredited diploma being that we were starting in High School. I do think it is necessary for us - I doubt I would be good at assigning things and making her do them if she didn't like them, so having outside teachers and things she must complete for her to finish the course is really good for us. If you are looking for a rigorous HS curriculum that you don't have to design and you want HS counselors and teachers that aren't you, then it is a good option. But if you are fine with being a full-fledged homeschooler and you can do that, then it probably isn't worth the money. For the record, my kid is currently feeling 'screwed over' by LS, because they are going back on their word of allowing her to take outside courses and having them put on her transcript. Because it is a school, there are graduation requirements and she currently is behind on the requirements because they won't transfer her courses on to her transcript.. :cursing: Sigh..
  8. DD is kind of freaking out about her current math score on her practice tests- her english & reading scores are good (27 on both) and her science is improving, but she has only taken one timed math one and her score totally freaked her out. Anyway, she wants to buy herself the chalk dust discs to do over the next month. Basically from what I have read they used to only be marketed as SAT prep, and as the SAT and ACT math covers a slightly different range of topics, I was wondering if anyone has had success using them for the ACT?
  9. Thanks to all who commented! Yes, she is currently a junior and is planning these courses for her senior year. She keeps jumping back and fourth between wanting AP history and no AP english, to wanting both (plus the psychology and calc.), to not wanting the history and wanting the English... Hopefully she will figure this out soon! She will not be taking them with PA homeschoolers- she is taking AP calc. through think well and most likely her other APs will come from Laurel Springs school. She is extremely ambitious so I am not against her having such a heavy course load, but she was interested in knowing whether anyone else had followed a similar schedule. If she knows of someone who has 'been there, done that' than she knows she can work hard enough and accomplish the same thing, too. ;) I think her main desire for the AP's is wanting to show college admissions that she is challenging herself more and more each school year.... Once again, thanks, and I will take in to account everyones comments!
  10. Does anyone have experience with their child jumping straight in to multiple AP courses? Of everyone I know, the child has tended to start out with just one AP and then graduate to three or four the next year. My daughter wants to take AP psychology, AP calculus AB, AP history - either european, world, or U.S. - and AP English language and Composition, but this will be her first year doing the AP's (next fall). I was wondering if anyone else's child has done something similar and still did well with the amount of coursework? By the way, Hi! I am new to the boards, and I have written two previous topics. I started homeschooling my daughter in 8th grade after issues with the school system, and she is currently a junior that is preparing for the ACT! Other than math, she attends an online school, Laurel Springs. Even with most of her courses coming from LS, we still utilize a lot of homeschool curriculum for extra courses. P.S. She ALSO wanted to take AP biology from Thinkwell, but has pretty much decided against it since she will be taking Physics and already wants to take the other 4 AP's. :p
  11. My daughter will be finishing Pre-calc using Teaching Textbooks this summer, and so we are looking to find a Calculus course that will work for her.... We are currently deciding between either Thinkwell or Chalkdust... Does anyone have any opinions on these two curriculums? Are there any curriculums other than Thinkwell/Chalkdust that you like? 12. Thanks for the responses! I will look in to the courses mentioned! She was definitely interested in statistics verses calculus, but because she will be majoring in biology and will be taking calculus in college, she wanted to take it her senior year. Thanks again!
  13. A few months ago, my daughter decided to double up her TT Algebra 2 lessons so that she could start (and finish) TT's Precalc prior to taking the ACT... Because of this, she is now thinking of taking calculus in the fall, but doesn't want something like Saxon... She has used it, as well as some online school courses, and has a hard time comprehending math courses that are textbased- she really thrives with TT's lectures. With that in mind, I was wondering if anyone knew of a Calculus course that has a similar lecture-style layout like TT? Thanks!
