  1. External cooling (tepid bathing, wet rags) can initially induce heat loss but they also activate heat-conserving and producing mechanisms. Causing quick rebound spikes in temperature.

Vasoconstriction, shivering, and goosebumps contribute to significant discomfort. IMO, skip the bath.

I hope the meds do the trick. High fevers are very scary. They are the number one reason for ED visits to our children's hospital.

  2. Well, it sounds like it's necessary to your husband. It sounds like he feels more strongly about than you do that he should be on a team.

I think team sports are a great thing. I also think it is vital that dads make these kinds of decisions for sons. He knows what it's like to be a guy while we're just on the outside looking in. Julie already suggested a martial arts or swim team. Remember it takes a long time to develop a skill, so please do give him time and outside opportunity to "get there."

    :iagree: Great advice!

  3. "Crazy thought, but would you consider talking to the manager of the club pool? Perhaps he/she has the power to accept the $500 as full payment? It's a possibility that it's enough money that you might be able to join a nearby pool with your funds. I'd certainly talk to the person in charge/owner to see if it's feasible. They might consider it a 'scholarship'.":iagree:

We pay around $600 for the summer membership. It includes all the club amenities: swimming pool, gyms, aerobics, yoga, playground, 16 tennis courts (indoor and outdoor), volleyball, and racquet ball courts and lessons. Swim team summer- $95 per kid, year round- 75-per kid per month.

I volunteer as a USA swimming official and my husband does all the computer work. Because of that, our swim team fees are waved.

When my kids were very little I worked as a swim instructor and lifeguard to get a discount on our pool membership.

  4. I have three swimming this year. They all practice at the same time, 6:30 am-9 am Mon.-Fri.. I usually stay and let my little guys play in the baby pool or work out while they practice. I have one that is heavy into the competition and two that participate in meets but aren't very competitive. The meets are a lot of fun.

Swimming, for my guys, is very social. We are close friends with four other families on the team. We also all belong to the club and spend most summer days hanging out after practice together.

  5. Well, moldly (hard) cheese is different than other moldy foods. I would not eat a slice of bread that had mold that I had cut off.

    Here is some info:

    Moldy Cheese

    Moldy Bread, etc

I do eat hard cheese with the mold cut off, and of course moldy cheese in which the mold is intentional, but not other moldy foods.

Edited to add this link: USDA Mold Fact Sheet It's good to see our tax dollars at work doing something useful. lol

Thanks, this entire thread is oddly interesting.

  6. On June 28, 1968, the United States Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill, which moved three holidays from their traditional dates to a specified Monday in order to create a convenient three-day weekend and for the first time recognized Columbus Day as a federal holiday. The holidays included Washington's Birthday (which evolved into Presidents' Day), Veterans Day, and Memorial Day. The change moved Memorial Day from its traditional May 30 date to the last Monday in May. The law took effect at the federal level in 1971 . After some initial confusion and unwillingness to comply at the state level, all fifty states adopted the measure within a few years, although Veterans Day was eventually changed back to its traditional date.

    I'm an AHG leader.

I'm also a full time nursing student and USA swimming official. My (adopted) son has severe FAS and physical disabilities. I know how hard it is to step up and spread yourself thin but it can be so worth it in the long run. The time I spend with my girls at meetings and activities is priceless. I'm usually very tired and don't feel like doing it at all but I force myself. As soon as we arrive at the church I get a second wind. We always have a fantastic time.

American Heritage Girls is very similar to Girl Scouts except it is Christian. We meet every other week to play games, sing songs, build friendships and work on badges. I won't lie, it's a heck of a lot of work, but it's so much fun.

In addition to the biweekly meetings we plan 2 fun activates each month. Some things we’ve done this year include, ice and roller skating, mom and daughter tea party at a castle, bowling, hiking, swimming, mini-golf, park days with group building games, picnics, scavenger hunts, bike rides, daddy and daughter dance, and amusement park days. We march in 3 parades throughout the year and participate in many local activities.

We also do 2-4 service projects a month. They usually consist of visiting a nursing home (the same one for 2+ years), helping at the food kitchen, cleaning pews, changing the books, making meals for new moms and funerals, and many more during the holidays. I can honestly say the girls learn (and enjoy) the service portions the most. The relationships they’ve developed from the nursing home visits are amazing! A tip though- plan a craft or activity the 1st few times. The kids are very nervous and the residents can be a bit intimidating.

On Memorial Day we lay flowers on each of the soldier’s graves at our big cemetery. We then go to the observance to honor and remember the service of those still living by taking the time to color pictures or making cards with a message of thanks we let the veterans know that we think about them and appreciate their time. We hand deliver these cards with a handshake and a verbal “Thank you†to show these veterans that we are willing to have some courage in honoring their courage in serving our country. This is a little hard for the very shy little ones but the response is so worth it!

We have three big ceremonies each year. One to recognize the new girls who are earning their joining award badge and two Award ceremonies to recognize the badges and service stars the girls have earned.

Although it is so time demanding and a lot of work, the payout is absolutely worth every second! I feel honored to be a part of these girls’ lives and have a special place in my heart for each of them. It’s also a great way to spend time with my own daughters doing something we all love.

It's so much fun! I even enjoy the yoga. It isn't very "zen" but more of stretching and breathing exercises. I love the tree and triangle stretches the best.

We also love the advanced skiing, ski jumping, hula hooping, snowboarding and, of course, boxing!
