    Book a Week 2018 - BW38: To a Young Lady, With Some Lampreys

    Last week I finished several books:

    De komst van Joachim Stiller (The arrival of Joachim Stiller) written by Hubert Lampo. Lampo is considered the Flemish master of magical realistic writing. I have never read something magical realisitic before and I am not sure what I think about it. I like his use of words though.

    De bekentenis van de leeuwin (The confession of the Lioness) written by Mia Couto an author from Mozambique. I liked the change of point of view every chapter while continuing the story line.

    The Fire, a sequel on The eight a story about a chess mystery in current and past times. I liked The Eight better then the fire.

     

    Currently reading:

    Mali Blues by Lieve Joris. Joris is a Flemish author who writes often about Congo and other African countries. Most often her books are a kind of travellogs. I like her writings.

    It becomes winter by Kasparov. A book about Poetin, compared to Jeltsin and other leaders in Russia after the fall of the USSR.

    I finished several books this week:

    The accident by Ismael Kadare (a little bit philosophical mystery)

    Volume 9 out of 10 of ‘Small History of the Netherlands’ now reading volume 10.

    Graag zien, a biographical book by a blind author. (Graag zien = to like to see but also to love in Flemish)

    Magnut for the micro history square

    ETA: I also finished go,went, gone by Jenny Erpenbeck. A very readable but also impressive book

     

    Readings in progress:

    Volume 10 of the Small History

    Somehow I'm overcome by a wave of no longer caring what people think about me. Now I need to get a dozen more cats.

     

    I don't care very much for cats although we have 2 in house, but I would like to get that wave too when I become 50. Sooner is right too!!!

    History after 1950

    Thank you for all those topics and tips!

    The Flemish textbook for this era is not published yet, but looking at your imput they still skip a lot (I got the table of contents from the publisher)

    Cold War and the Birth of the EU are covered by the textbook, but somehow they skipped apartheid and the arab-Israeli conflict (they do spend a chapter on feminism).

    I f I read this I think dd should follow the news better, then the questions will follow.

    We did a course on pop and rock music some years ago, when she thought the Beatles are a car... (Volkswagen Beetle), 

    I realise I can't cover all the history of all the world, but in grade 12 she will have passed most of the exit exams, and we will have time to dig more into history as Latin and History will be the last exams...

    Help me with science please

    As you will have exit exams in grade 6,8, (10) 12 you have to take that in account too.

    You can still read, explore en watch documentaries during k-grade 5, but I would recommand to use a textbook in grade 6. The exam is nothing serious, more a test in comprehension reading,but some experience with Flemish textbooks won't hurt. Especially for those who don't see the easy answer and will hunt for a more complicate one.

    In grade 8 there is an exam in science AND in Technical Education.

    The science exam is mostly biology with a very small amount of Chemistry and even less Physics. Just cover the states of matter with a Flemish textbook (they use certain symbols I have not seen anywhere else) The most of Physics is covered by the Technical Education Exam. Although it is geared to the more practical tracks, one can deepen it with more theory, If you have the knowledge for that.(I didn't)

    So in grade 9, when the tracking becomes more seriously, the science becomes more seriously too (finally).

    If you don't aim for going back to school, you can aim for the grade 12 exams directly which give you space and time to cover science your way.

    Realise American science textbooks are written for +one hour of science per day, one science per year. Those books are huge ?

    I wrote you earlier in private, that it is difficult to find a biology textbook in English according the Flemish Exam board, so you have to do some parts with a Flemish textbook.

    Realise also that Flemish exams tend to ask for implementation of the theory, not just the theory or proofs. But I think you are aware of that ?

    I fullfilled finally my 17th century square! I did not like the book extremely, but after 5 different attempts with different books I’m glad thissquare is done.

    2 squares to go: I reserved 1 book through IBL for micro history and another has to be picked up in the backstock (magazin?) for translated book square then I will take a closer look to Britt Trip. After the loss of my list I didn’t sit down to make a new one, so have to find out how much I have already covered. May be I will take another year to complete Britt Trip

    History after 1950

    Planning grade 11/12 means entering the last era of our 10 box history system of the Netherlands.

    Box 10 is history after 1950, and we cover more history then 'just' the Netherlands or 'just' Belgium, but it is also the box I know very little of (my history textbook finished at 1950) So I can use some input for topics to cover (We did a special about feminism with History so my knowledge about topic is stretching further then 1950), movies to see & discuss, books to read etc. For my self but mostly for dd who will be 16/17 yo by then. History will be one of our last exams, so we will have time to dig in ?

    I finished several books:

    - Lauwertakken en Distels: a book with reviews of the books of Louis Couperus a famous Dutch writer. Inspired to read more of him.

    - Een liefde: a book that was heavily censored in its time, and now has been republished with the original text. 

    - The diary of a bookseller: a light reading but not a 'must heave read'.

    - The Glasblowers by Daphne du Maurier: a wel written family chronicle set during the end of the ancient regime and the French Revolution. I really liked the book and made me curious about other non Rebecca like books of her.

     

    Currently reading:

    - Emotional Flexibility

    - Talk of the Village

    Karen - Hope your friend and home is okay. Thank you for all the great links.

    Jenn - Quite exciting to hear your son is coming home for a while and glad to hear your exploits with Susan's kids.

    Loeseje - Hope your daughter recovers quickly from having her wisdom teeth pulled.  Lots of soup and soft foods.  

    I just finished reading Rachel Caine's Ink and Bone which is excellent. Once I started reading, couldn't put it down.  Added the 2nd book Paper and Fire to my virtual stacks to continue the adventure.   Still reading Twyla Tharp's The Creative Habit.  One of the exercises was go on a creative diet and do one week without.  I gave up listening to audio-books in the car  and also put away my ipad so I didn't start going online until later in the day.  My creativity has rocketed.   I rediscovered an old story and have been doing quite a bit of editing.  Yeah!  

     

     

     

    The problem yesterday was she was SOOOOOO hungry, but not able to chew chewy things yet.

    she is eating pancakes now ? she still looks like a hamster though ...
